Job Summary:

The CNO is responsible for leading the nursing workforce with a focus on professional nursing practice, clinical operations, care management, quality and safety, the patient experience, performance improvement, and workforce planning. The CNO will plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operation of nursing departments assigned in accordance with federal, state, and local standard, guidelines, and regulations to provide quality patient care. The CNO is responsible for carrying out duties assigned by the CEO.

Major Tasks, Duties, and Responsibilities:

  • Sets strategy and execute on priorities to achieve organizational goals.
  • Works with the administrative staff to develop and lead a transformative strategy to improve delivery of patient care services across the continuum of care.
  • Leads facility-wide initiatives to ensure safety, quality, and exceptional patient experience.
  • Establish structures and provide adequate resources to create a culture of continual improvement.
  • Decreases clinical variation by establishing reliable processes and consistent utilization of standards and protocols.
  • Serves as staff to the Board of Trustees and committees of the Board to provide clinical input required to make Board decisions
  • Serves as staff to advisory board members with local health care affiliates
  • Serve as staff to administrative meetings and other medical meetings as deemed necessary
  • Directs clinical operations by developing procedures, policies and initiatives that support nurse sensitive patient care services and outcomes across the system
  • Leads patient care workforce planning efforts in conjunction with HR and nursing directors through forecasting, recruitment, staff development, retention, and supplemental staffing.
  • Creates and aligns a system vision for nursing in support of the organization’s mission, vision, and strategic goals.
  • Works with nursing leaders to consistently improve processes and structures across the system to ensure expectations for performance are established and accountability maintained.
  • Creates a culture of learning around the health care environment, regulations, compliance, health care economics and health policy.
  • Maintains communication with nursing leadership team through rounding and large group meetings
  • Maintains awareness of applicable laws and/or regulations. Remains current on regulation changes and accreditation bodies; recognizes implications to the organization. Recommends appropriate action and risk management measures to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Maintains current knowledge of the state nurse practice act in all states under scope of responsibility

Compliance, Risk & Safety Responsibilities:

  • Adherence to Healthcare Regulations: Ensure compliance with applicable healthcare laws, including HIPAA, CMS regulations, OSHA standards, and hospital-specific protocols.
  • Identification, evaluation, and escalation of potential compliance risks, to appropriate individuals (e.g. Compliance Officer, Risk Management, HR). 
  • Adhere to Safety Standards and follow all company safety policies, procedures, and guidelines to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Proactively identify hazards and recognize and report unsafe conditions, equipment, or practices to supervisors promptly. Document and report any accidents, injuries or near misses.

Supervision (Received and Given):

  • Directly supervised by the CEO.
  • Supervision given to the Director of OB, Director of Inpatient Services, Director of Anesthesia, Director of ED, Director of Surgical Services, ACNO, and Hospitalist. 

Skills, Education, and Experience:

  • At least two years experience as a staff nurse
  • RN Licensure in the State of Iowa
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required
  • Master’s degree in nursing preferred or actively pursuing or has demonstrated the equivalent experience in comparable positions.
  • Annual Infection Prevention education requirements as required
