The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is searching for individuals to fill positions within the Substation Department of Power & Way. The position of Substation Maintainer 448 is responsible for the routine and emergency maintenance of our Traction Power Substations for the Blue, Green and Red Lines of our Rapid Transit System. We utilize electricity from local utility suppliers to provide DC traction power for our Rapid Transit System. Detailed Description

Duties:

  • Tests, cleans, inspects, adjusts, and performs routine maintenance on substation equipment.
  • Performs inspection and maintenance under the guidance of a 648 Substation Maintainer on the following equipment: rectifiers, transformers, AC/DC switchgear, battery banks, and chargers.
  • May include maintenance of fan and heater systems for each substation.
  • Able to troubleshoot electrical systems, including relays and switches.
  • This position will promote a safe and secure atmosphere, follow all safety and security rules, and perform other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

  • Applicants must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Applicants should have relative knowledge of DC and AC power systems.
  • Apprenticeship or trade school program is preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience troubleshooting and repairing electrical equipment is preferred.
  • Ideal experience should include familiarity with: feeder breakers, rectifiers, AC switchgear, relays and switches.
  • Applicants must have the ability to work around low, medium, and high voltages.
  • Applicants must have a valid Ohio Driver's License with four (4) points or less.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and stand for prolonged periods of time. The employee is frequently required to bend, stoop, climb, reach with hands and arms, handle or feel, see with normal visual acuity, talk, speak and hear. The employee is occasionally required to lift materials up to 50 lbs. The employee is regularly required to monitor a video display terminal.

Mental Demands: Reading, watching, studying, observing, focused listening. Concentrated attention to detail for prolonged periods of time. Auditing, inspecting, tabulating data, proofreading, analyzing and evaluating.

Additional Information: The performance of these duties may be required at any time of the day or night, any day and night of the week. The position is a bargaining unit position. The position is also safety sensitive and subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Examination Information: Candidates selected to participate in the hiring process will be notified of the exact time and place of the examination. The examination process will consist of multiple parts: a written examination, performance assessment, and record evaluation (for internal candidates only). Candidates must attain a minimum composite score of 70% to move forward in the process.

Weights for a final score will be assigned as follows for external candidates: Written Examinations 30%, Performance Assessment 70%.

Weights for a final score will be assigned as follows for internal candidates: Written Examination 30%, Performance Assessment 55%, Record Evaluation 15%.

Internal candidates must meet all record evaluation criteria to gain the 15% weight. Records evaluation information includes a review of the following:
  • 5 or more absence occurrences
  • 2 or more AWOL or absence control suspensions
  • 3 or more active written reminders (regardless of the level)
  • 5 or more misses (regardless if they are active or not active)
  • 4 or more active tardies
  • Drug or alcohol suspension
  • Driver’s License Policy suspension (CDL or Regular)
  • Active Decision-Making Leave (DML)
