Summary: As part of the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank team, the Volunteer Program Coordinator leads the day-to-day management of the Food Bank's volunteer program. This position recruits, schedules, and supports volunteers while creating a positive and meaningful volunteer experience from start to finish. The Volunteer Program Coordinator works closely with staff across the organization to identify volunteer needs, build community partnerships and help grow volunteer engagement in support of the Food Bank's mission. This position reports to the Director of Development Operations.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, schedule and coordinate volunteers to support warehouse operations, food drives, special events, administrative projects and other Food Bank programs.
  • Work with staff across the organization to identify and manage volunteer needs and ensure volunteer opportunities are planned and staffed throughout the year.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for individuals and groups interested in volunteering, providing excellent customer service from initial inquiry through volunteer participation.
  • Maintain volunteer management software, volunteer records and scheduling to ensure accurate reporting and communication.
  • Develop volunteer job descriptions, training materials and other resources needed to support volunteer activities.
  • Coordinate volunteer orientation and placement while ensuring warehouse staff, including the Volunteer Operations Coordinator, provide day-to-day training, supervision and guidance during volunteer activities.
  • Recruit new volunteers through community outreach, presentations, social media, the Food Bank website, corporate partnerships, schools, civic organizations, faith communities and other community groups.
  • Build and strengthen relationships with corporate and community partners to increase volunteer participation and team-building opportunities.
  • Develop strategies to retain volunteers and encourage repeat volunteer participation.
  • Coordinate and oversee court-ordered community service volunteers in accordance with Food Bank policies.
  • Conduct volunteer satisfaction surveys and use feedback to improve the volunteer experience.
  • Develop and implement volunteer recognition efforts, including volunteer acknowledgements and the annual volunteer recognition event.
  • Oversee the Volunteer Leader Program.
  • Prepare monthly reports on volunteer participation, volunteer hours and warehouse production metrics.
  • Work closely with the Development team to identify opportunities to deepen relationships with volunteers, volunteer groups and corporate partners through philanthropic engagement and financial support.
  • Support volunteer needs during Food Bank special events and emergency response efforts as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Serve as a critical first responder during emergency events, including hurricanes, pandemics and other disasters, which may require flexible work hours.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or one to two years of experience coordinating volunteers, customer service or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with people of all ages, backgrounds and skill levels.
  • Comfortable speaking to groups and representing the Food Bank in the community.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work in warehouse environments with varying temperatures and moderate noise.
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of inquiries and daily responsibilities.
  • Passion for the Food Bank's mission and commitment to serving the community.
