Safety & Preventative Maintenance Lead

Position Summary

The Safety & Preventative Maintenance Lead supports a safe, compliant, reliable, and productive operation by leading daily safety activities and coordinating preventative maintenance follow-up on the production floor. This role works closely with employees, supervisors, maintenance, quality, and leadership to identify hazards, reinforce safe work practices, support training, investigate incidents, help track equipment condition concerns, and promote a proactive culture of safety, equipment care, and continuous improvement across departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead by example in following all company safety policies, procedures, and required personal protective equipment standards.
  • Conduct regular safety walks, job hazard observations, workplace inspections, and basic equipment condition checks throughout production and support areas.
  • Identify, document, communicate, and help correct hazards related to machinery, guarding, lockout/tagout, dust collection, chemical use, ergonomics, forklift traffic, slips/trips/falls, noise, material handling, and equipment wear or damage.
  • Coordinate with maintenance and production leaders to support preventative maintenance schedules, follow up on open equipment issues, and verify that safety-related maintenance concerns are addressed promptly.
  • Perform preventative maintenance procedures.
  • Coach employees and team members on safe work practices, proper tool use, housekeeping expectations, near-miss reporting, and early reporting of abnormal equipment conditions.
  • Support new-hire orientation, safety refreshers, toolbox talks, and hands-on training for cabinet manufacturing processes.
  • Assist supervisors with incident investigations, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and follow-up verification.
  • Track safety concerns, corrective actions, training completion, inspection findings, equipment condition concerns, preventative maintenance follow-up items, and incident trends.
  • Participate in safety committee meetings and help communicate safety goals, preventative maintenance priorities, and progress to employees as the Safety Team Lead.
  • Partner with maintenance and production leaders to ensure equipment issues and unsafe conditions are addressed promptly.
  • Promote continuous improvement by recommending safer methods, workstation improvements, engineering controls, maintenance improvements, and process changes.
  • Support emergency preparedness activities, including evacuation drills, first-aid readiness, spill response awareness, and severe weather procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling employee injuries, reports, maintenance concerns, and follow-up documentation.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience working in manufacturing, woodworking, cabinetry, furniture, millwork, maintenance support, or a similar production environment.
  • Strong understanding of shop-floor safety practices, hazard recognition, housekeeping, PPE, safe equipment operation, and basic preventative maintenance concepts.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with employees, supervisors, managers, maintenance personnel, and cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including coaching, follow-up, accountability, organization, and problem solving.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and use basic computer systems, forms, spreadsheets, maintenance logs, work order systems, or safety software.
  • Willingness to complete assigned safety and maintenance-related training such as OSHA 10 or OSHA 30, first aid/CPR, forklift safety, lockout/tagout, hazard communication, incident investigation, equipment inspection, or preventative maintenance training.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

  • Work is performed in a cabinet manufacturing facility and may include exposure to wood dust, noise, moving equipment, adhesives, finishes, solvents, and varying temperatures.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, bend, reach, climb stairs, and move throughout the production floor for extended periods.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE, which may include safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, safety footwear, respiratory protection, or other task-specific equipment.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull materials within company guidelines and job requirements.

Schedule and Reporting

This position reports to the Director of Manufacturing Services. The schedule may vary based on production needs, shift coverage, training requirements, audits, preventative maintenance activities, equipment follow-up, and incident response. Overtime or occasional off-shift support may be required.

Salary : $48,053 - $63,113
