What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Bookkeeper/HR position at GREAT LAKES LABEL?
Job Overview
We’re hiring a Senior Bookkeeper / HR to take ownership of our day-to-day accounting and grow into our Accounting & HR Manager role within the next year. Our current Accounting & HR Manager plans to retire in approximately twelve months, and this position is designed as a planned transition: you’ll handle core accounting from day one—including accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, and month-end close—while cross-training on payroll and human resources so you’re ready to step up when the time comes.
The right person is an experienced, detail-oriented bookkeeper who is also ready to take on leadership and people-facing HR responsibilities. You’ll report to and train directly under the current Accounting & HR Manager throughout the transition.
- Manage full-cycle accounts payable and accounts receivable, including invoicing, payment runs, collections, and resolving discrepancies
- Maintain the general ledger: prepare and post journal entries and ensure accurate coding
- Reconcile bank accounts, vendor and customer statements, and other GL accounts
- Support and contribute to month-end and year-end close
- Assist with financial reporting and provide information to support the Controller’s analysis
- Maintain accurate, well-organized financial records and documentation
- Begin cross-training on payroll processing and HR administration alongside the current Accounting & HR Manager
- Communicate professionally with vendors, customers, and employees
As you demonstrate proficiency and readiness, you’ll be developed to take on responsibilities that may include:
- General ledger management
- Payroll processing and oversight
- Support month-end and year-end close
- Human resources functions: onboarding, benefits administration, employee records, and HR compliance
- Supporting management with reporting, budgeting, and process improvement
What we are looking for:
- 5 years of progressive accounting or bookkeeping experience, including AP/AR and general ledger work
- Solid understanding of full-cycle accounting and month-end close
- Proficiency with accounting software and strong Microsoft Excel skills; experience with QuickBooks is a plus
- Strong attention to detail and a high standard for accuracy
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Professional communication skills and the ability to handle confidential financial and employee information with discretion
- Experience with, or a strong aptitude to learn, core HR functions including payroll, onboarding, benefits administration, employee records, and HR compliance
- Readiness and interest in taking on HR responsibilities and a leadership role within the year
