TITLE: Teacher Consultant for Exceptional Students
QUALIFICATIONS: Valid Kentucky Certificate
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS:
- Maintain an orderly system of management and keeps the Director of Special Education fully informed of the program’s activities and problems as well as routine matters relating to his/her own accountability.
- Serve as instructional support/coach for special education teachers and students with disabilities based upon the individual needs of the teacher and student.
- Serve as a member of the ARC committee as requested by the school or Director of Special Education.
- Assist special education teachers in scheduling support staff to use their resources in the most efficient manner to meet the needs of the students on their caseload.
- Assists in determining specific learning problems, skill deficiencies, and/or social adjustment difficulties of the student, and helps initiate the appropriate interventions and educational program as established by federal, state, local, and SBDM regulations/policies.
- Maintains confidentiality of student records in accordance to district policies and procedures.
- Follows the policies and procedures as outlined in the district’s Special Education Policies and Procedures Manual and revised procedures as outlined by the Director of Special Education in accordance to KDE regulations.
- Collaborate with the ARC committee and testing center to assist in planning the most appropriate evaluation and/or re-evaluation based upon the individual needs of the student.
- Assist with completing monthly and end-of-year reports as deemed necessary by the Director of Special Education or Superintendent.
- Assist in conducting annual Child Find activities, including district wide screenings and development of interagency relationships with community organizations.
- Assist in developing and maintaining district wide transition planning procedures and documentation.
- Assist special education teachers in developing appropriate health and/or safety plans based upon the individual student needs, as applicable.
- Attends state, regional, and local meetings to stay abreast the most current information/regulations as necessary for the discussion of matters relevant to disabilities.
- Disseminates materials and trains local staff on new and revised materials related to special education.
- Develops and maintains linkages with other special education related agencies.
- Makes home visits, as needed, to develop positive communication with parents/guardians in order to establish and proper service delivery for students with disabilities.
- Assists in formulating district checklists and forms for accurate documentation to comply with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Monitors individual education programs and student folders to ensure students’ needs are being met within specified legal guidelines/regulations.
- Assists in providing teachers with accurate training and feedback regarding appropriate due process procedures in accordance to the district’s Special Education Policies and Procedures and current administrative regulations.
- Assumes responsibility for requisitioning and maintaining needed equipment and supplies after consulting the Director of Special Education.
- Maintains professional competence through professional development activities provided by the district and/or consortia, and through self-selected professional growth activities.
- Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulation, and Board of Education policies.
- Serves as a member of the districts ASD Cadre and assists staff with the development appropriate action plans for students identified on the Autism spectrum.
- Obtain and maintain appropriate instructor certification of the districts adopted program continuum of interventions and emergency safety physical interventions, train appropriate staff, and maintain accurate records of trainings.
- Assist in conducting local, state, and federal audits as requested by the Director of Special Education or Superintendent.
- Upon request, consults with school personnel concerning behavioral and academic needs of students.
- Provides formal and informal in-service training for district teachers.
- Conducts district-wide in-service training to all school personnel, as requested.
- Assists with training for accurate utilization of IEP’s.
- Provides pertinent information regarding appropriate special education instructional and support materials.
- Assists teachers in the areas of community-based instruction and student transition activities.
- Provides recommendations and documentation concerning individual students to Principals, upon request.
- Assists in recruitment and hiring of special education staff as requested by the Director of Special Education or Superintendent.
- Maintains an accurate work calendar and submits to the Director of Special Education in a timely manner.
- Maintains accurate travel reimbursement records and submits to the Director of Special Education in a timely manner.
- Always maintains the highest professional standards in personal conduct.
- Performs related duties and assumes other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Director of Special Education or the Superintendent.
