Administrative

  • Assist the Director of Nursing in planning, developing, organizing, implementing, evaluating and directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing services department in accordance with current rules, regulations and guidelines that govern the facility
  • Assist in developing and implementing a nursing services organizational structure
  • Work with the Minimum Data Set/Resident Assessment Instrument (MDS/RAI) Coordinator to schedule, conduct and submit resident assessments
  • Allocate resources efficiently while ensuring that residents obtain their highest practical physical, mental and psychosocial well-being
  • Collaborate with medical professionals, consultants and organizations including government and advocacy groups
  • Coordinate with other resident services to ensure continuity of resident care
  • Read and interpret long-term care regulations and requirements of participation
  • Assist in the development of nursing policies and procedures which meet the current standards of nursing practice, comply with state and federal regulations, reflect facility philosophy and support operational objectives
  • Assist the Director of Nursing in obtaining staffing information that must be posted on a daily basis
  • Participate in developing, implementing and periodically updating the resident’s written discharge plan
  • Develop and periodically update nursing services objectives and statements of philosophy
  • Ensure reference material (i.e., Physicians’ Desk Reference (PDR), regulations, professional standards of practice, etc.) maintained at the nurses’ stations is current Recommend to the Director of Nursing written material that will assist the nursing services department in meeting the day-to-day needs of residents
  • Monitor Quality Measure Reports
  • Participate in facility surveys (inspections) made by authorized government agencies as requested by the Administrator or the Director of Nursing
  • Participate in the development, maintenance and implementation of the facility’s quality assurance and performance improvement (QAPI) program for the nursing services department
  • Conduct administrative duties such as completing medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, charting, etc., as necessary

Committee Functions

  • Serve on, participate in and attend various committees of the facility in the absence of the Director of Nursing
  • Participate in regularly scheduled reviews of the discharge plans
  • Schedule, attend and participate in Care Plan Committee meetings
  • Serve on the QAPI Committee as directed
  • Care Plan and Assessment

Nursing Care

  • Ensure that direct nursing care is provided by a licensed nurse, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) and/or a nurse aide trainee qualified to complete the procedure
  • Greet newly admitted residents upon admission | Escort them to their rooms as necessary
  • Make rounds with physicians as necessary
  • Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure that medications are being administered as ordered and that treatments are provided as scheduled
  • Participate in the interviewing and selection of residents for admission to the facility including the Preadmission Screening and Resident Review (PASARR)
  • Provide direct nursing care as necessary
  • Provide the Director of Nursing with information relative to the nursing needs of the residents and to the nursing services department’s ability to meet those needs
  • Report medication errors to the Director of Nursing
  • Report problem areas to the Director of Nursing | Assist in developing and implementing corrective action
  • Schedule daily rounds to observe residents and to determine if nursing needs are being met

Care Plan and Assessment

  • Ensure that staff members are providing care that reflects the wishes of the resident
  • Participate in the preliminary and comprehensive assessments of the nursing needs of each resident
  • Participate in the development of a written person-centered care plan for each resident that identifies the problems/needs of the resident, indicates the care to be given, goals to be accomplished and which professional service is responsible for each element of care
  • Encourage the resident and his/her family to participate in the development and review of the resident’s plan of care

Staff Development

  • Assist the Staff Development Coordinator in planning and conducting in-service training
  • Attend continuing education programs
  • Provide leadership training that includes the administrative and supervisory principles essential for the Charge Nurse/Nurse Supervisor

Safety | Sanitation

  • Ensure that all nursing services personnel follow established departmental policies and procedures including appropriate dress codes
  • Ensure that all personnel wear and/or use safety equipment and supplies (e.g., back brace, mechanical lifts, etc.) when moving or lifting a resident
  • Ensure that all resident care rooms, treatment areas, etc., are maintained in a clean, safe and sanitary manner
  • Ensure that an adequate supply of personal protective equipment (PPE) is immediately available to personnel who conduct procedures that involve exposure to blood or body fluids
  • Ensure that nursing services personnel follow established infection prevention and control procedures
  • Participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of the procedures for reporting hazardous conditions or equipment
  • Participate in the development, implementation and maintenance of the infection prevention and control program for monitoring communicable and/or infectious diseases among the residents and personnel
  • Report missing/illegible labels and safety data sheets (SDSs) to the Safety Compliance Officer or other designated person

Equipment and Supply

  • Assist the Director of Maintenance in developing a preventive maintenance program for maintaining the nursing services department equipment and supplies in a safe and operable manner
  • Ensure that appropriate SDSs are on file for hazardous chemicals used in the nursing services department
  • Ensure that only trained and authorized personnel operate facility equipment
  • Participate in the development and implementation of procedures for the safe operation of all nursing services equipment
  • Recommend to the Director of Nursing the equipment and supply needs of the department
