Basic Function

Building Maintenance Worker is a bargaining unit employee under the direction of a foreman, supervisor, or other designated management employee, that functions as instructed and required in construction, maintenance and operation of District facilities. This position utilizes trade skills (carpentry, masonry, plumbing, etc) to enhance and support the District facilities and will be bid as needed.

Essential Function

  • Work independently, be self-motivated and exercise sound judgment while accomplishing tasks required to maintain, improve, remodel or construct District facilities.
  • Demonstrate positive support for and implementation of District decisions.
  • Maintain an attitude that welcomes change, looks for ways to improve the work environment and seeks to improve service to other departments.
  • Promote teamwork, a safe work environment, and adherence to District Policies, procedures and safety rules.
  • Work together in cooperation with supervisor, foremen, and other personnel to ensure facilities are maintained or improved and projects are completed.
  • Accomplish all building craft work at the journeyman level, including carpentry, plumbing, concrete, glazing, interior and exterior finishes, roof work, minor electrical repairs and installation, grounds keeping tasks, irrigation installation and repair, and other work as required to maintain District facilities.
  • Specify, estimate and select material requirements.
  • Read and update facility drawings and specifications.
  • Establish safe construction work areas and shop practices.
  • Guide, direct and train Facilities Serviceman, student helpers, and contractors as instructed.
  • Able to acquire and maintain a Washington State herbicide/pesticide license within 6 months.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform finish carpentry, cabinet making work, and advanced carpentry and plumbing.
  • Assist in completing key lock design and completing key lock installation and repairs.
  • Layout, specify and order materials for remodel and addition work.
  • May be assigned Facilities Serviceman work.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • First aid card including CPR Training equivalent to the State of Washington requirements for Industrial First Aid.
  • Certificate of training from supplier of key control system used by District.
  • Obtain Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Public Operator Pesticide License in the Rights-of-Way Weed Category and in other categories as required by the District (Aquatic Pest Control, PCO General, Ornamental Weed, Agricultural Weed, etc.)

Experience

  • Five years established experience in carpentry, concrete work, roof application and repair, sheet metal work, door and window installation and repair, glazing, painting, floor covering repair, plumbing repair and fixture installation, caulking and weather sealing, and grounds maintenance.
  • Master all necessary tools including jack hammers, power and air tools and equipment associated with the above crafts.

Other Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  • Write legibly and be able to maintain records, files and fill out forms.
  • Ability to use a computer for sending and receiving email, maintenance management software, and for general maintenance needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of District Policies and Procedures.
  • General knowledge of the District’s Strategic Plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions, learn quickly, work independently, exercise sound judgment and be self motivated.
  • Excellent skill in the use and repair of construction/maintenance hand and power tools.
  • Ability to guide and direct student helpers.
  • Knowledgeable in fire and building codes.
  • Read and update Facilities plans, drawings and specifications.
  • Ability to update and maintain maintenance management records.

Physical Requirements

  • Work outdoors in all local climatic conditions.
  • Ascend and descend stairs and ladders.
  • Climbing to access the work as needed.
  • Work in confined space or areas of restricted movement.
  • Work in close proximity to high voltage equipment.
  • Lift and carry up to 55 pounds.
  • Sufficient physical fitness and abilities to complete normal and routine maintenance tasks.
