Under general supervision of the Public Health Nursing Manager, both reporting to the Administrator and/or Health Officer, the Nurse Health Educator conducts and delivers the daily programs, services, and activities of the Public Health Nursing Division. The Nurse Health Educator uses independent judgment while making decisions that influence the above-mentioned operations. The Nurse Health Educator is the agent of the Grant County Health Officer, acting within the framework of established National, State and Local Laws, codes, rules, and guidelines, including Health Department policies, protocols, and objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Employee may be asked to perform additional duties prescribed by the rules of the Indiana Department of Health and Local Board of Health under the general supervision of the Public Health Nurse Supervisor, Administrator and/or Health Officer.

· Recognize and evaluate education needs within diverse community groups

· Discover ways to meet community health needs by personally preparing and presenting trainings and by using available resources

· Seek and create connections/resources within the community for training and education

· Prepare, present and facilitate cultural and age-appropriate presentations on multiple health topics

· Travel to events, expos, conferences in Grant County

· Must be willing to work some evening and weekend hours

Performs any and all other tasks as directed by the Nursing Manager or Administrator

Minimum Training and Experience Required:

  • Must hold a current, unencumbered RN license or LPN license
  • Must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license
  • Minimum one year of experience and outreach efforts demonstrating communication and engagement skills
  • Current and deepening knowledge of personal and public health issues
  • Knowledge of community programs and resources available throughout the state
  • Experience and interest in working with children and families
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication:

  • Must be able to read, write and speak English with the ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing
  • Strong communication and presentation skills to effectively engage diverse audiences.

Environmental Adaptability

  • Ability to work effectively in a busy office environment and operate as a team member
  • Ability to provide information/education to a variety of different socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic groups
  • Ability to calmly handle irate or belligerent citizens
  • Ability to assist in nursing duties, tasks and projects assigned by the Public Health Nurse Manager
