JOB TITLE 

 

Speech/Language Pathologist Assistant

 

QUALIFICATIONS:  High school diploma or equivalent. Must pass the para educator test or possess an AA degree. SLPA Certification or Bachelors in Communication Studies preferred. Bilingual preferred. Ability to work with children of all ages, school staff, and parents. 

 

REPORTS TO:  Director of Special Education, Speech/Language Pathologist (SLP), and/or Building Principal. 

 

JOB GOAL:  Provide assistance to the District’s SLP in speech rooms and classrooms. The position works on articulation and language skills with students individually or in small groups. Performs a variety of other clerical duties to support speech therapy. Requires travel between schools. 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Provide therapy assistance to speech/language students individually or in small groups as assigned by SLP; lead students in articulation drills; lead students with complex communication needs through language activities. 
  2. Provide general therapy assistance; model correct tongue and mouth position; model correct sound; model correct language skills.
  3. Act as a model and assist students to maintain good behavior; assist the therapist with small group management and reinforce proper behavior; listen to student to assist therapist; monitor behavior of individual/small groups.
  4. Accompany individuals or small groups of speech/language, special education, and general education students throughout school premises; communicate with both general and special education teachers for progress. 
  5. Assist SLP in planning and adaptive materials and activities as directed. Assist in the administration of standardized assessments as required by SLP; conduct speech screeners; create bulletin boards, flash cards, rewards; maintain adequate supply of materials and protocols in speech room.
  6. Maintain progress reports based on speech treatment plan; maintain individual data sheets. 
  7. Duplicate, coordinate and distribute individual education programs/tests/student records to proper departments, check special and general education confidential files for therapist; telephone/schedule parents for conferences. 
  8. Create, maintain, and update digital student files, schedules, assessment reports, department inventories, student reports, and other materials. 
  9. Track paperwork involved in the referral process; maintain awareness of special education rules and regulations covering distribution of forms to appropriate people. 
  10. Provide supervisory duty to students with disabilities during non-instructional times. 
  11. Work cooperatively with parents, staff, and students to coordinate and communicate bus schedules and other information as needed. 
  12. Assist with the management of children with diverse health and behavior needs. 
  13. Be able to perform job tasks as follows: 
    1. Lift and carry 10-50 lbs. frequently. 
    2. Assist with lifting over 50 lbs. frequently. 
    3. Provide care to students in toileting—requires transferring weight skills. 
    4. Use de-escalation techniques with students when necessary. 
    5. Be able to bend, kneel, squat, twist, turn, and extended arm use involving various weights frequently. 
    6. Be on feet the majority of the work shift. 
    7. Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints. 

 

LIMITS OF AUTHORITY: 

 

Director of Special Education 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT 

 

LENGTH: 190 contract days including 10 paid holidays, 6.5 hours per day variable to 8 hours per day, depending on needs of students. 

SCHEDULE: As assigned by the Director of Special Education 

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Determined by experience and college credits, as per state law and local board policy.

EVALUATION: By Director of Special Education on/before May 30th of each year.
