Job Title: Special Education Para-Educator- 2 positions available 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: High school graduation or equivalent required. Must pass the paraeducator test with a score of 455 or higher or possess a minimum of 72 quarter college credits. Ability to work with children of all ages, school staff, and parents. Interest in working with students with disabilities. Prior experience preferred. Must successfully pass a criminal history check. Must complete Core Competency Training within the first year of employment.

 

REPORTS TO: The Director of Special Education and/or Building Principal, Special Education Teacher

 

JOB GOAL: To support students with disabilities by assisting with instruction, behavior, and daily living skills under the direction of certified staff. To provide individualized and small-group support that promotes student participation and growth. To collaborate with teachers and staff to ensure a safe, supportive learning environment.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Ability to effectively work with and support K–12 special education students, fostering a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment.
  2. Assist in the educational and social development of students under the direction and guidance of the facilitator and classroom teachers.
  3. Provide support for individual students inside and outside the classroom to enable them to fully participate in activities.
  4. Work with other professionals, such as speech therapists, social worker, occupational and physical therapists.
  5. Support students with emotional or behavioral concerns and assist them in developing appropriate social skills.
  6. Prepare materials for students as determined by the special education teacher.
  7. Assist in monitoring students’ daily progress.
  8. Provide one-on-one support to assigned students, addressing individualized academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs as directed.
  9. Provide instructional assistance to students in one-to-one small group settings, within the special education room or regular classroom setting, as assigned.
  10. Work with parents of students as seems appropriate by the special education teacher and the Director of Special Education.
  11. Provide supervisory duty to students with disabilities during non-instructional times.
  12. Assist in self-help skills such as toileting (e.g. diapering, catheterization) and feeding, as necessary and assigned by the special education teacher or Director of Special Education.
  13. Correctly position children in a safe and secure manner in adaptive equipment and effectively transfer orthopedically disabled children from wheelchairs to prone standers.
  14. Daily implementation and follow-up of therapy plans developed by specialists to meet communication and motor skill goals of students.
  15. Supervise students by enforcing safety regulations while riding the bus.
  • Properly fasten in seats when required.
  • See that each child is seated and stays seated.
  • Other safety regulations.
  1. Help load and unload students requiring assistance, including wheelchair students.
  2. Work cooperatively with parents, staff, and students to coordinate and communicate bus schedules and other information as needed.
  3. Cooperate with drivers in filling out reports.
  4. Assist with management of children with special health problems or behavior problems, e.g., seizures, attention deficit disorders
  5. Perform other duties as assigned by the Special Education Director to help meet the needs of the department.
  6. Be able to perform job tasks as follows:
  • Lift and carry 10-50 lbs. frequently.
  • Assist with lifting over 50 lbs. frequently.
  • Provide care to clients in toileting requires transferring weight skills.
  • Use restraint techniques with clients when necessary.
  • Be able to bend, kneel, squat, twist, turn, and extended arm use involving various weights frequently.
  • Be on feet the majority of the work shift.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints.

 

LIMITS OF AUTHORITY: Reports to building principal and/or Director of Special Education

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

 

LENGTH:This position is dependent on funding:190 contract days includes 10 paid holidays, 6.5 hours per day variable to 8 hours per day, depending on needs of students.

SCHEDULE: As assigned by the Director of Special Education and building principal.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Determined by experience and college credits, as per state law and local board policy.

EVALUATION: By the principal and/or the Director of Special Education on/before May 30th  each year.
