Job Title: Behavior Support Paraprofessional

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Reports to: Director, Behavior Interventionist, and campus admin

Pay Grade: Paraprofessional

Primary Purpose:

To assist in the supervision, care and instruction of students in the self-contained or regular classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel.

 

Qualifications:

Education/Certification: High School Diploma or equivalent

Special Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area Desire to assist students with special needs in a learning environment Emotional maturity and stability necessary for the specialized work involved.

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Performance Responsibilities

1. Works with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced and outlined by certified staff, as described by an IEP plan.

2. Assists the certified staff in devising special strategies for reinforcing learning materials and skills based on a sympathetic understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities.

3. Administers tests, homework, make-up work, etc. for the purpose of assisting teacher in evaluating students’ progress and/or recognizing the individual needs of the student.

4. Alerts the teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.

5. Monitors and assists individual special education students in the classroom, library, playground activities, community outings, vocational sites, public transportation system, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the safety of assigned students. 

6. Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g. rest rooms, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safety and welfare of students.

7. Provides direct instruction to students under the supervision of a certified teacher for the purpose of implementing IEP

8. Implements behavioral plans designed by the ARD committee for students with behavior disorders or other conditions for the purpose of assisting in meeting students’ needs and providing a consistent environment.

9. Provides verbal and/or written feedback of observations for the purpose of assisting certified teachers for the purpose of assisting certified teachers in evaluating students.

10. Administers first aid for the purpose of providing emergency or necessary care in accordance with district, state, and federal requirements.

11. Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school environment and community.

12. Participates in in-service training programs as approved.

13. Maintains safe working environment and encourages colleagues to be safety minded in the performance of all school-related duties.

14. Be a positive role model for students; support mission of school district.

15. Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, and administration.

16. Maintain confidentiality.

17. Respects the integrity of the student.

 

Working Conditions:

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing, and pulling. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom or adaptive equipment. May be required to lift and position students with physical disabilities; control behavior through physical restraint; and assist non-ambulatory students. Exposure to biological hazards.
