About the position. The Controller will oversee all accounting operations, financial reporting, and compliance for a dynamic commercial contractor, ensuring accurate financial statements, managing monthly close processes, and partnering with leadership to support strategic decision-making. This role is critical in maintaining financial integrity, optimizing systems and processes, and leading a high-performing accounting team. Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
- Financials: Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements (CPA prepares annual reviewed statements), manage work-in-process (WIP) schedules, complete monthly/quarterly/annual journal entries, complete ancillary financial reports for EVP review. (15-20% more time required at year-end)
- Banking: Reconcile multiple accounts monthly, deposit and enter daily cash receipts, prepare weekly cash report for EVP. (15%)
- Insurance: Respond to estimating insurance inquiries for projects. Complete annual renewals and insurance audits. Report and assist with all generally liability-related claims. Review and pay monthly insurance invoices. Manage insurance for company fleet. Liaison for all insurance-related matters. (10-15% varies depending on requests/month)
- Sales Tax: Oversee and review all sales and use tax filings and sales tax requests. Continuing research on construction-specific tax issues. Stay up-to-date on rate changes. Complete sales tax audits when applicable. (5-10%)
- Budget: Prepare annual budget for approval by EVP.
- Accounts Receivable: Track aging and ensure project accountants track lien rights. Prepare aging report summary for EVP weekly.
- Payroll: Oversee payroll and annual W-2 processing (payroll processed in-house)
- 1099 Processing: Process annual 1099s for multiple business entities.
- ESOP Accounting & Reporting: Record loan/interest payments. Work with 3rd party administrator to provide all necessary data. Coordinate with CPA to provide and record all ESOP-transaction related entries.
- Income Tax: Work with CPA to pay and process income tax for multiple entities.
- General Accounting: Oversee Senior Accountant, Junior Accountant, and Accounting Assistant with various general accounting duties.
- Project Accounting: Oversee Project Accounting Manager, stay up-to-speed on financial-related issues with jobs.
- Information Technology: Work closely with MSP to ensure IT stays current, company IT issues are being resolved, approving IT-related renewals.
- Miscellaneous: Monthly/quarterly direct cost entries, small entities, backup for AIA contracts, prepare annual financial review/tax packets for CPA for all entities. Assist executive management with various requests.
What you need. To effectively thrive in this organization, the Controller will have:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience with a minimum of 3 years in a supervisory or management role
- Construction accounting experience required, including job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage of completion (POC) methodology
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and internal controls with proven experience managing month-end close processes
- Proficiency in accounting software (Sage 300 CRE, Foundation, Viewpoint, or similar construction ERP systems preferred) and advanced Excel skills
