What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Worker: Library Assistant position at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary?
This position is for eligible, current students enrolled at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary.
Goddard Library, the main Gordon-Conwell Seminary library, serves the entire Gordon-Conwell Seminary community. While its primary service community is the students and faculty at the South Hamilton campus, the Goddard Library also serves online students, Doctor of Ministry students, and students from the Boston, Charlotte, and Jacksonville campuses. The library serves those involved in vocational ministry in the New England area, and the public as well.
Student workers are integral to effective library services at Goddard Library. Those who apply to work as student workers at Goddard Library must be accepted into a Gordon-Conwell degree program; possess good communication skills; be able to work well with others; and pay careful attention to detailed library procedures.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
1. Working at the circulation desk: checking in and checking out books. Students should develop a basic understanding of the circulation system and be able to answer basic circulation questions.
2. Shelving books and periodicals. Students should develop a basic knowledge of how to shelve books using the Library of Congress classification system.
3. Answering the telephone, which entails answering basic questions concerning the library, circulation issues, and other basic customer service issues; or knowing to whom the phone call can be forwarded?
4. Teaching library users how to use the online catalog.
5. Ability to open and close the library following outlined procedures.
6. Flexibility in covering shifts in case of illness or emergency.
7. Other duties as assigned by the Public Services Librarian or the Director of the Library.
8. Must be willing and able to work Saturdays and Sundays and in the summer months.
