Director of Compliance

Description

The Director of Compliance is responsible for the design, implementation, and oversight of the Company’s enterprise compliance program across all lines of business and operational areas.

This position provides enterprise-wide oversight of compliance risk and ensures that Company practices, strategies, and initiatives align with applicable laws, regulations, and regulatory expectations. The Director of Compliance serves as a strategic advisor to leadership and business units, enabling the organization to achieve its objectives while maintaining full regulatory compliance.

This role is distinct from product and filing execution functions and is accountable for compliance governance, risk assessment, monitoring, and regulatory alignment across the organization.

 Functions:

• Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive enterprise compliance program.
• Establish and maintain compliance policies, standards, and procedures.
• Develop compliance systems, workflows, and control expectations that promote consistent, repeatable, and documented compliance across business functions and that are capable of being independently tested by Internal Audit.
• Define governance structures, reporting protocols, and escalation processes for compliance risks.
• Evaluate program effectiveness and drive continuous improvement.
• Maintain current knowledge of applicable federal and state insurance laws, regulations, and regulatory expectations.
• Interpret regulatory requirements and assess enterprise-wide impact on operations, products, and practices.
• Translate regulatory changes into actionable guidance for business units.
• Oversee responses to regulatory inquiries, examinations, and data calls.
• Identify, assess, and prioritize compliance risks across all functional areas.
• Establish and oversee compliance monitoring, control design review, and management-level validation activities. The Director of Compliance is responsible for establishing compliance standards and management processes; Internal Audit independently evaluates the effectiveness of those standards and processes.
• Ensure timely identification, reporting, and remediation of compliance issues.
•  Maintain documentation of compliance activities, findings, and corrective actions.
• Serve as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and business units on compliance matters.
• Provide guidance on achieving business objectives within regulatory constraints.
• Participate in strategic planning, product development, and operational initiatives to ensure compliance considerations are incorporated.
• Review new or modified business practices to ensure alignment with regulatory standards.
• Lead, manage, and develop the compliance team, including setting priorities and performance expectations.
•  Establish clear roles and responsibilities across compliance functions.
• Foster collaboration with Product Management, Underwriting, Claims, IT, and other operational areas.
• Develop team capabilities in regulatory analysis, monitoring, and compliance program management.
• Serve as a primary point of contact for regulatory bodies on compliance-related matters.
• Oversee coordination and support of regulatory examinations and market conduct reviews.
• Ensure accuracy and completeness of regulatory reporting and required submissions.
• Develop and implement compliance training and awareness programs.
• Promote a culture of compliance, accountability, and ethical conduct throughout the organization.
• Serve as a resource for compliance-related questions and guidance.
• Provide oversight of key compliance-driven processes (e.g., licensing, filings coordination, regulatory reporting), ensuring appropriate controls are in place.
• Ensure operational functions responsible for execution are aligned with established compliance standards.
• Perform other duties as assigned. 

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree (Juris Doctor or equivalent) preferred.
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in insurance compliance, legal, regulatory, or related roles.
• Demonstrated experience developing or managing a compliance program.
• Strong knowledge of property and casualty insurance regulations and operations.
• Strong analytical ability with capacity to interpret complex regulatory requirements.
• Ability to translate re
  gulatory expectations into business practices and controls.
• Proven leadership and team management capabilities.
• Strong communication and presentation skills suitable for executive audiences.
• Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and drive alignment.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and complex initiatives.
• Ability to work flexible hours, travel to all organization offices (including Pennsylvania, Ohio, and South Dakota) and travel to vendor work sites required.
• Ability to work in an office environment with moderate noise level, remain in a stationary position and operate a computer a majority of the time required.
• Ability to move throughout the office to access work materials and to move work materials weighing up to ten pounds daily required.
