Position Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides skilled nursing care and clinical support to children and adolescents in state custody in accordance with the Mississippi Nurse Practice Act and all applicable state regulations. This role is essential in promoting the physical, emotional, and behavioral well-being of youth while ensuring safe, high-quality, trauma-informed care. The LPN works collaboratively with the interdisciplinary treatment team to support each youth's individualized care plan in a structured residential setting.

This position requires verifiable experience working directly with children or adolescents. Applicants who do not have prior experience working with children will not be considered. Applications that do not demonstrate relevant child care or youth services experience will be automatically rejected.

Key Responsibilities (Not Limited To):

  • Provide nursing care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or licensed physician in compliance with the Mississippi Nurse Practice Act.
  • Administer prescribed medications, treatments, and therapies accurately and safely.
  • Complete routine nursing assessments, monitor vital signs, and evaluate the overall health status of youth.
  • Observe, assess, and document changes in physical, emotional, and behavioral conditions, reporting concerns promptly to the appropriate medical provider.
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and provide first aid and nursing interventions as needed.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and updating individualized healthcare plans for youth.
  • Monitor medication effectiveness, adverse reactions, and treatment compliance.
  • Educate youth and direct care staff on medications, chronic health conditions, wellness, and preventative healthcare practices.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation in accordance with agency policy, HIPAA, and state regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control standards, medication management policies, and nursing best practices.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, therapists, case managers, direct care staff, and other members of the interdisciplinary team to coordinate comprehensive care.
  • Participate in treatment team meetings and provide clinical recommendations regarding youth health needs.
  • Ensure all medical records, physician orders, medication administration records (MARs), and health documentation remain current and accurate.
  • Participate in required staff meetings, continuing education, and agency training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current, unrestricted Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the State of Mississippi (Required).
  • Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing Program.
  • Experience working with children or adolescents is required.
  • Experience in pediatrics, behavioral health, residential treatment, juvenile justice, school nursing, or child welfare is preferred.
  • Current CPR certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Strong clinical assessment, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound clinical judgment during emergencies.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Compassionate, patient-centered approach with a commitment to trauma-informed care.
  • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) certified (required)
