Position Summary:
The Produce Buyer is responsible for all product orders, vendor/farmer relations, organization, merchandising, pricing, and maintaining the cleanliness of the produce department. A strong understanding of inventory control is necessary. Consistently lifting 50lbs throughout the day is also necessary.
Schedule: Monday through Friday, from 7 am to 3 pm. May have the opportunity to start and end the shift earlier. Might have one weekend shift per quarter for inventory counts (four times a year).
This is a full-time position. We also have a part-time Produce Assistant Position available.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Create vibrant merchandise displays - Ensure that product is faced, rotated, and well stocked
- Provides customer service by answering questions from customers, coworkers, and others.
- Negotiate fair prices with vendors to reach our sales goals
- Build effective and mutually beneficial vendor relationships
- Track product movement through sales reports
- Receive products during deliveries from vendors: - verifies invoices to ensure that the ordered list matches the received list; - verifies the quality of products and expiration dates; - submit for credits as needed and promptly
- Reviews inventory and refills as necessary regularly; visually inspects products on the floor and in back stock, and checks product expiration dates.
- Ensure that signage and shelf tags are properly placed. Replace and request signage or tags as needed.
- Re-packs items as necessary, following all packaging sanitization procedures:
- Stocks and/or stores items First-In First-Out (FIFO) method.
- Separates, weighs, wraps, and labels products.
- Cleans the department, including sweeping, mopping, and sterilizing hard surfaces (trash out, recycling out, cardboard out etc).
- Will be cross-trained on the cash register to support opening the store if needed.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to speak or listen, stand (most of the time), walk, bend, stoop, crouch, twist, climb, and reach overhead and forward with hands and arms. Must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Hand and finger dexterity, motor control, and eye/hand coordination are needed. Vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to withstand temperatures in walk-in refrigerators and freezers with appropriate attire.
Work Environment:
Work is performed primarily in a busy retail environment, which can be hot and humid. Noise level is moderate to loud. There is a risk of being cut by a utility knife. Must be able to endure the stresses of dealing with the public. Long periods are spent in a walk-in refrigerator, exposed to cold temperatures.
Qualifications Needed for Position:
Experience and Skill Requirements: The following experience and skills are considered essential:
- At least one year of experience in a similar or related role is preferred. Will train as needed.

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $17.50 - $22.00 per hour
