Master in Social Work Intern Field Work Placement

Reports To: Program Director, West Brooklyn Community High School

Days: Monday - Friday

Hours: 14-21 hours

Salary: $0 - this is an unpaid internship position.

Job Summary:

West Brooklyn Community High School is a partnership transfer high school committed to supporting students to obtain a high school diploma using a strength based and trauma informed approach. Our students are overaged and under-credited, aged 16-21 years old, and were not successful in their previous school environments due to various factors and circumstances. Our work is grounded in building strong relationships with our students and empowering them through our everyday practice, instilling the tools and skills they will need to achieve personal, academic and post secondary success.

This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic and supportive school setting within our transfer school model. The MSW Intern works with the Good Shepherd Services team, grounded in the mission and vision of the GSS agency, and in collaboration with the DOE with everyday tasks that support the management and enhancement of school programming, including but not limited to outreach, facilitation of 1:1 and Group counseling sessions, development and implementation of community activities, events and workshops and collaborating with school based teams to address school community needs that support and empower our students and families.

Clinical Tasks

  • Provide individual targeted counseling services for a caseload of about 10- 15 overaged and under credited students honing in on social-emotional support in alignment with the Advocate Counselor’s plan of ensuring academic and post secondary success.

  • Develop and facilitate groups/workshops responsive to student needs, such as parenting, Men and/or Women groups.

  • Collaborate with the Advocate Counselor team, parent coordinator and School Social Worker to provide family support services and facilitate family meetings as needed and appropriate.

  • Provide crisis intervention and conflict mediations as needed

  • Assist in carrying out other aspects of the program including planning trips, celebrations, community building and leadership activities to promote school culture.

  • Work with the School Social Worker and GSS team to provide students with referrals to resources and community based services as needed.

  • Generate and submit data as required and ensure that appropriate case notes, documentations and data entry are completed.

  • Participate in professional development workshops and reflective supervision.

  • Perform other duties as assigned and needed to further enhance the performance of the program

Macro Practice Tasks

  • Network, connect and liaise with local organizations and agencies to build a pathway for resources for our students

  • Development and maintenance of a structure to identify and connect students with resources and community based services as needed.

  • Collaborate with the School Social Worker and Program Director to plan and execute resource fairs and workshops throughout the school year.

  • Collaborate with the Admin Team to create and implement protocols and structures that support school programming and promote school culture

  • Work with cross functional teams such as the Intake Team and Attendance Team to assess data and implement interventions or approaches that address projected enrollment targets and attendance rate and graduation rate goals.

Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in an MSW program (1st year or 2nd year) with field placement eligibility.

  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.

  • Strong interest and prior experience in working with adolescent/young adults individually and in groups in a school setting is helpful.

  • Commitment to social justice, equity and cultural responsive practice

  • Commitment to work from a strength based and/or youth development perspective.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.

  • Must be proficient in Google Suite
