The Role: Information Security Project Manager

Location: Durham, NC – in office Tuesday - Thursday

Type: Contract to Hire

What You’ll Do:

The Information Security Project Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and driving the successful delivery of information security projects, initiatives, and remediation activities across the organization. This role ensures that cybersecurity, risk, compliance, privacy, and operational resilience requirements are embedded into project planning and execution while supporting business objectives, regulatory obligations, and the organization’s overall information security strategy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Lead the planning, coordination, execution, monitoring, and closure of information security projects, ensuring deliverables are completed on time and aligned with approved scope, budget, and quality expectations.
• Develop and maintain project plans, schedules, RAID logs, action trackers, status reports, and other project governance documentation.
• Coordinate cybersecurity risk assessments, security reviews, control implementation activities, audit remediation, vulnerability remediation, penetration testing findings, and compliance initiatives.
• Partner with Information Security, IT, Quality, Legal, Privacy, Procurement, Internal Audit, vendors, and business stakeholders to define project requirements, dependencies, milestones, and success criteria.
• Ensure information security and data protection requirements are considered throughout the project lifecycle, including intake, design, implementation, testing, go-live readiness, and post-implementation review.
• Track and report project risks, issues, decisions, dependencies, overdue actions, and escalation items to information security leadership and relevant stakeholders.
• Facilitate meetings, workshops, working sessions, and stakeholder updates to maintain alignment, accountability, and timely decision-making.
• Support governance, risk, and compliance activities by coordinating evidence collection, control validation, audit response activities, and remediation tracking.
• Maintain clear ownership and accountability across project workstreams by identifying responsible parties, due dates, dependencies, and escalation paths.
• Coordinate third-party and vendor-related security project activities, including due diligence, remediation follow-up, contract-related security actions, and supplier risk initiatives.
• Support disaster recovery, business continuity, operational resilience, incident response readiness, and crisis management initiatives as assigned.
• Prepare executive-ready project status updates, dashboards, and management reports that clearly communicate progress, risks, blockers, and required decisions.
• Drive continuous improvement in information security project delivery practices, documentation standards, reporting discipline, and stakeholder engagement.
• Maintain confidentiality of company, customer, employee, supplier, and project information and comply with all applicable information security policies, standards, and procedures.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Business, Project Management, or a related field; equivalent experience may be considered.
• Five or more years of experience managing IT, cybersecurity, information security, risk, compliance, infrastructure, or technology projects.
• Demonstrated experience coordinating cross-functional initiatives involving technical, business, compliance, and leadership stakeholders.
• Working knowledge of information security principles, cybersecurity controls, risk management, vulnerability management, audit remediation, and compliance processes.
• Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks such as ISO/IEC 27001, NIST Cybersecurity Framework, NIST Risk Management Framework, CIS Controls, GDPR, or similar standards.
• Experience using project management tools, collaboration platforms, issue trackers, reporting dashboards, and document repositories.
• Project management certification such as PMP, PRINCE2, CAPM, Agile/Scrum, or equivalent is preferred.
• Information security or risk certification such as CISSP, CISM, CISA, CRISC, Security , ISO 27001 Lead Implementer, or ISO 27001 Lead Auditor is desirable.
• Strong project management, planning, organization, prioritization, and follow-through skills.
• Ability to translate technical and security concepts into clear business language for nontechnical stakeholders.
• Strong understanding of cybersecurity risk, control implementation, governance processes, and compliance obligations.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise executive-level reporting.
• Ability to influence stakeholders, drive accountability, and resolve barriers in a matrixed environment.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-support skills.
• High attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate project documentation, trackers, and status updates.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining professionalism and confidentiality.
