Purpose of Job:
The Senior Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining GOAL Academy’s data infrastructure to ensure accurate, reliable, and timely data is available for reporting, analytics, and operational decision-making. This role serves as the lead for the organization’s data team, providing direction, prioritization, and oversight for data-related work. Working closely with application developers, software engineering staff, and cloud professionals, the Senior Data Engineer collaborates on data-focused solutions and develops automated data pipelines, standardized data models, and shared datasets that form the foundation for dashboards, reports, and data-driven initiatives across the organization. The Senior Data Engineer helps establish best practices for data integration, quality, documentation, and governance, supporting both academic and operational needs while modernizing and stabilizing the organization’s data environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leads the organization’s data team, providing guidance, coordination, and oversight for all data-related work.
- Supervises the Data Processing Administrator and the Data Visualization Administrator, providing guidance, oversight, and mentorship.
- Designs, builds, and maintains automated data pipelines to transform, standardize, and deliver data across multiple systems.
- Develops and maintains reusable, well-documented Power BI datasets and semantic models, including DAX calculations, for academic and operational reporting.
- Works closely with application developers, software engineering staff, and cloud professionals to design solutions that balance reporting, analytics, and application needs.
- Partners with IT infrastructure staff to ensure local and cloud resources are appropriately provisioned for data workloads, recommending solutions that balance performance, cost, and scalability.
- Ensures data accuracy, integrity, and reliability throughout the data lifecycle, including collection, storage, transformation, and delivery.
- Works closely with the Assistant Director of Cybersecurity to implement and maintain data security best practices across systems and ensure compliance with policies.
- Collaborates with Academic Leadership to ensure dashboards, reports, and datasets provide actionable, timely, and accurate information.
- Establishes and enforces best practices for data integration, version control, documentation, and governance across the data team.
- Performs ongoing monitoring and optimization of data pipelines, ETL processes, and Power BI datasets to ensure efficient and reliable operations.
- Partners with the Cloud Data Developer and other technical staff to leverage Azure data services for integration, automation, and scalability.
- Leads and participates in peer review processes for SQL scripts, ETL pipelines, and Power BI datasets to maintain quality and consistency.
- Provides expert guidance to the Data team in interpreting data, building reports, and implementing data-driven solutions.
- Drives the modernization and standardization of GOAL Academy’s data environment, reducing reliance on manual processes.
- Reports directly to the Director of Application Services, keeping them informed on team progress, data initiatives, and project status.
- Models professionalism and supports the development and growth of all Information Services team members, fostering a collaborative and accountable team culture.

Minimum Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must possess a valid Driver's License
- Must reside in Colorado
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related field.
- 5 years of experience in data engineering, database management, and ETL.
- Strong experience with SQL Server and relational database design.
- Proficiency in Power BI, including building and maintaining datasets, semantic models, and DAX calculations.
- Experience with Azure data services, including Azure SQL and Azure Data Factory.
- Knowledge of data integration, ETL processes, and pipeline automation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to data quality, accuracy, and reliability.
- Experience leading or mentoring technical team members, including assigning work and providing guidance.
- Ability to collaborate with application developers, cloud staff, and academic leadership to design and deliver solutions.
- Understanding of data security best practices and experience working with IT or cybersecurity teams to protect sensitive data.
- Strong documentation skills, including tracking changes and version control (e.g., Git).
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical staff.
Preferred:
- 10 years of experience in large-scale data environments and data modeling.
- Experience with Azure Synapse Analytics, Microsoft Fabric, or other advanced Azure data services.
- Knowledge of additional BI tools or reporting platforms beyond Power BI.
- Familiarity with data governance frameworks, compliance standards, or academic data management best practices.
- Experience in a K–12 or public sector educational environment.
- Azure certifications, such as:
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals (optional for entry-level Azure knowledge)
- Experience collaborating with leadership to translate business requirements into data solutions.
