GMHC is the world’s first HIV/AIDS service organization. Today, we provide housing, mental health, legal services, nutrition, testing, prevention, and advocacy for LGBTQ communities and people living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Our work is grounded in equity, dignity, and care.


We’re looking for a Director, Institutional Giving to lead GMHC’s foundation, corporate, and government fundraising. This is a senior role that shapes the strategy behind our institutional revenue and manages a high-performing team responsible for securing major multi-year support for the organization.


The Director reports to the Vice President of Individual & Institutional Giving and works closely with leaders across Programs, Finance, Communications & Brand, and the Executive Team.


What You’ll Do

Institutional Fundraising Strategy


  • Build and execute a comprehensive institutional giving strategy aligned with GMHC’s mission and program goals.
  • Lead proactive prospecting to grow our portfolio across foundations, corporations, and government funders.
  • Monitor funding trends and position GMHC for large-scale and multi-year opportunities.
  • Partner with senior leadership to align fundraising priorities with organizational strategy.


Grant Proposal Development


  • Oversee development of high-quality proposals and LOIs.
  • Work with program teams to gather data, outcomes, and stories that strengthen our narratives.
  • Manage internal review processes and ensure timely submission of all materials.


Relationship Management


  • Steward relationships with institutional funders and serve as a key representative of GMHC.
  • Cultivate and manage a portfolio of high-value funders.
  • Coordinate engagement strategies with senior leaders to deepen partnerships.


Grant Management & Reporting


  • Oversee compliance, reporting, and funder deliverables across all institutional grants.
  • Partner with Finance and Programs to track expenditures and outcomes.
  • Ensure timely, accurate reporting that demonstrates impact and accountability.


Team Leadership


  • Lead and mentor the institutional giving team.
  • Support staff in proposal development, stewardship, and grant management.
  • Build a collaborative, mission-driven team culture.


Cross-Department Collaboration


  • Work closely with Programs, Finance, and Communications & Brand to ensure institutional fundraising is aligned, strategic, and operationally sound.
  • Contribute to organization-wide case statements, impact reports, and fundraising materials.
  • Provide regular updates to senior leadership.


Data & Reporting


  • Use EveryAction or similar CRM tools to track pipelines, proposals, grants, and interactions.
  • Maintain accurate records and use data to guide strategy and reporting.


What You Bring


  • 7 years of institutional fundraising experience with a strong record of securing foundation, corporate, and/or government grants.
  • Leadership experience managing people, projects, and cross-functional work.
  • Strong grant writing and narrative development skills.
  • Experience cultivating and stewarding institutional funders.
  • Ability to manage complex deadlines and multiple funding streams.
  • Clear, professional communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
  • Experience with CRMs (Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, EveryAction, or similar).
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.


Work Model


  • Hybrid role based in NYC.
  • In-office days tied to meetings, collaboration, and funder engagements.
  • Remote flexibility for writing, research, and administrative work.
  • Occasional travel across NYC and occasional evening flexibility.
  • Participation in AIDS Walk New York is required for all GMHC staff.

Salary Range: $95,000-$110,000 per year (DOE)
