- Pay Rate: $17.20 – $23.00 per hour
- Shift / Hours: Night Shift, Wednesday–Sunday, 8:00 PM – 4:30 AM

JOB SUMMARY:
The Specimen Technician (SPT I) provides essential operational support within the Specimen Processing Department in a high-volume laboratory environment. This role focuses on specimen processing, data entry, and quality control while adhering to strict safety, compliance, and productivity standards. The position requires strong attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing daily requirements in a biohazard setting.
The Specimen Technician (SPT I) provides essential operational support within the Specimen Processing Department in a high-volume laboratory environment. This role focuses on specimen processing, data entry, and quality control while adhering to strict safety, compliance, and productivity standards. The position requires strong attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to adapt quickly to changing daily requirements in a biohazard setting.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department, including A-station, presort, centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging/microfilming, and specimen pickup and delivery
- Enter high-volume data accurately, maintaining productivity standards of approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour
- Process specimens with confidence, accuracy, and efficiency to meet departmental completion times
- Learn and understand specimen types and associated laboratory tests ordered by clients
- Maintain compliance with test-ordering regulations, which may change daily
- Work effectively in a production-focused environment emphasizing quality and productivity
- Follow all safety, compliance, and biohazard handling procedures
- Maintain a clean, organized work area
- Communicate effectively with staff at all levels and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing customer and operational demands
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent (required)
- Basic computer knowledge and data entry proficiency
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Willingness to work nights, weekends, holidays, on-call shifts, and overtime as required
NICE-TO-HAVE EXPERIENCE:
- Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience
- Medical background, including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory
- Prior hospital laboratory experience
- Experience working in a production or high-volume environment
REQUIRED SKILLS:
- Data entry and keyboarding accuracy
- Attention to detail and quality control
- Time management in a fast-paced environment
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Knowledge of laboratory testing or specimen processing
- Strong organizational and multitasking abilities
