Shift / Hours
- Night Shift: 11:30 PM – 8:00 AM, Monday–Friday
- Rotating Saturday required
- Flexibility for weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime as needed
Position Overview
The Specimen Technician I (SPT I) provides general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department in a fast-paced production laboratory environment. This role requires strong data entry accuracy, attention to detail, and the ability to adapt to changing priorities while maintaining compliance and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform specimen processing functions including A-station, presort, centrifugation, aliquoting, imaging/microfilming, and specimen delivery.
- Accurately enter data at a rate of 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Learn and apply specimen types and test-ordering requirements, including frequently changing compliance regulations.
- Work efficiently in a production-driven laboratory environment with strict quality and turnaround-time standards.
- Handle specimens safely in a biohazard environment, following all safety and compliance procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of staff and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
- Adapt to daily workflow changes and varying customer demands with flexibility and professionalism.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Basic computer skills and data entry proficiency
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to learn and comply with laboratory safety and regulatory requirements
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous laboratory or specimen processing experience
- Medical background with knowledge of medical terminology
- Prior hospital or clinical laboratory experience
- Experience working in a production or high-volume environment
Work Environment
- Biohazard laboratory setting
- Emphasis on productivity, quality, and departmental completion times
- Physically active role requiring manual handling of specimens
