Job Summary:
The Medical Technologist I performs routine and complex laboratory testing with a high degree of accuracy, precision, and timeliness. This role supports critical diagnostic operations by executing analytical procedures, maintaining quality control standards, documenting activities, and ensuring compliance with CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and internal laboratory policies. The technologist is responsible for identifying and resolving issues that may impact test performance while ensuring accurate reporting of patient results.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform specimen handling, processing, test analyses, and results reporting following laboratory procedures.
- Maintain records demonstrating that proficiency testing samples are handled identically to patient specimens.
- Analyze specimens using approved testing procedures and review/release results.
- Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety guidelines.
- Document all quality control activities, calibrations, instrument maintenance, and procedural checks.
- Follow policies for handling test system issues and performance deviations.
- Identify and correct problems affecting test accuracy or notify senior staff/supervisor as needed.
- Document corrective actions for any deviation from performance specifications.
- Follow procedures for reporting STAT and critical results.
- Maintain complete, accurate, and compliant records of all testing performed.
- Ensure reagents and test kits are labeled with opened/expiration dates when applicable.
- Participate in new procedure reviews and ongoing training.
- Attend monthly department meetings and all required safety training.
- Maintain cleanliness and professional appearance of the department.
- Participate in regulatory inspections as needed.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
Required Experience:
- 1 years of clinical laboratory experience performing high-complexity testing preferred.
- Experience working in regulated healthcare or diagnostic lab environments.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology OR
- Bachelor’s in Chemistry, Biology, or related science OR
- Previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433 (prior to March 14, 1990).
Required Skills:
- Ability to manage multiple procedures simultaneously and set work priorities.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting ability.
- Excellent communication skills; ability to interact with internal departments and clients.
- Strong commitment to accuracy, confidentiality, and regulatory compliance.
Preferred Skills:
- Customer service experience in a clinical or healthcare setting.
- Familiarity with regulatory inspections and laboratory accreditation requirements.
