What are the responsibilities and job description for the Business Analyst II position at Global Tax Network?
Position: Business Analyst II (Fully Remote)
Drive clarity and outcomes across modern, cloud-native products on a distributed services architecture. At Global Tax Network (GTN), you’ll partner with business stakeholders and technology leaders to discover needs, translate them into clear requirements and user stories, and support delivery in a pragmatic Agile/Scrum cadence—helping engineers ship meaningful features with the right scope, acceptance criteria, and measurable value.
Why people like GTN:
- Fully remote (work from home, full-time)
- Flexible schedule focused on outcomes
- Summer 4x10s program (four 10-hour days)
- 25 days of PTO plus paid holidays
- 401(k) with company match, competitive medical/dental/vision
- Ability to earn Spot Bonuses through achievements and excellent work
Who is GTN? We’re a mobility tax services firm, and our engineering team builds the internal and client-facing platform that powers it. This is product/platform engineering (not staff augmentation) with stable priorities and long-term ownership.
We build a modular platform for internal teams and clients (portals, workflow automation, documents, reporting, integrations) plus carefully scoped AI for internal productivity. Services are independently deployable, horizontally scalable, and shipped frequently via PR-based CI/CD.
We run pragmatic Agile with a strong code-quality bar. You’ll work in a small team (typically 3–4 developers) with high visibility and ownership from idea → production. No on-call rotation for this role; support happens during normal business hours.
This role is fully remote. We collaborate primarily during Central Time business hours with a few shared core hours for meetings. Our Maple Grove, MN office is available for optional visits.
Leadership & engineering culture: engineer-led decisions with lightweight design discussions when needed, pragmatic tech-debt management, and protected focus time. Our Software Director is also an individual-contributor programmer.
What success looks like
- Learn the domain and platform quickly; become a trusted partner to business, product, and engineering leaders
- Turn business goals into a prioritized, well-groomed backlog: clear epics/features/user stories with strong acceptance criteria and shared understanding
- Improve delivery flow and quality in an Agile/DevOps environment by clarifying scope early, managing dependencies/risks, and validating outcomes (UAT, feedback loops, and metrics)
What you’ll do
- Partner with business stakeholders and technology leaders to elicit, analyze, and document requirements; translate needs into epics, features, and user stories that engineers can implement
- Lead backlog refinement with the Product Owner and engineering team: define scope, assumptions, dependencies, and acceptance criteria; ensure stories are ready for sprint planning
- Support Scrum delivery by participating in ceremonies (planning, daily sync, review, retrospective) and helping remove ambiguity so the team can deliver predictably
- Work in an Agile model using tools like Azure DevOps: maintain strong traceability from business objectives → backlog items → releases; support release notes and stakeholder communications
- Create and maintain process flows, business rules, data definitions, and (where appropriate) lightweight functional specifications to support design and implementation
- Plan and execute UAT with business users: define test scenarios, validate outcomes against acceptance criteria, triage defects, and confirm readiness for release
- Identify and prioritize opportunities for AI-enabled automation and workflow improvements; help define responsible usage, guardrails, and success metrics for productivity-focused solutions
- Balance multiple priorities in a remote, distributed environment by communicating clearly, aligning stakeholders, and escalating risks early
Tools & tech you’ll work with
- Agile planning and work management in Azure DevOps (Boards, backlogs, dashboards)
- Distributed services platform context (microservices, APIs, integrations) to support effective requirements, scope, and dependency management
- Documentation and collaboration in Microsoft 365 (Teams, OneNote, Wiki-style documentation as applicable)
- Cloud and data ecosystem awareness (Azure, SQL/analytics) for reporting, integrations, and AI-enabled automation use cases
- DevOps delivery practices: PR-based workflow, environments/releases, and feedback loops (in partnership with engineering)
- Power BI / Microsoft Fabric familiarity (a plus)
What we’re looking for
Must-haves
- 7 years of Business Analyst (or similar) experience delivering software products in Agile environments (Scrum/Kanban)
- Strong requirements practice: elicitation, analysis, decomposition, documentation, and validation; able to write clear user stories and acceptance criteria
- Works directly with the business and other technology leaders; turns goals into prioritized backlog items and clear guidance for engineers
- Comfortable operating independently with light direction on priorities; proactively clarifies ambiguity and drives decisions to closure
- Facilitates workshops and conversations across functions; aligns stakeholders on scope, tradeoffs, and expected outcomes
- Understands systems at a high level (APIs, integrations, data flows) and can partner with architects/engineers to refine feasible solutions
- Creates and maintains shared artifacts (glossaries, business rules, data definitions, process maps) to keep teams aligned and reduce rework
- Unblocks delivery by surfacing risks early, managing dependencies, and driving timely stakeholder decisions
- Partners with the team throughout the sprint: supports story clarification, answers questions quickly, and validates delivered functionality against acceptance criteria
- Helps size and sequence work by breaking down large initiatives; documents assumptions, options, and impacts to support planning
- Supports issue triage and post-release validation during business hours: reproduces problems, captures clear requirements for fixes, and coordinates business verification
- Facilitates decisions on scope and requirements, ensuring alignment across business and technical stakeholders and documenting outcomes for the team
Nice-to-haves
- Experience as a Senior BA / Lead BA on cross-team initiatives (complex workflows, integrations, and enterprise platforms)
- Strong Azure DevOps experience (Boards, dashboards, queries) and comfort working with CI/CD and release processes
- Analytics and automation background (Power BI/Fabric, workflow automation, and/or AI copilots) with a focus on practical, responsible adoption
