The IT Infrastructure Specialist is responsible for ensuring the reliability, security, and optimal performance of the organization’s enterprise server and network infrastructure. This position is a critical six-month contract engagement intended to provide elite, hands-on infrastructure support while systematically transferring knowledge to an internal IT team member who will assume these responsibilities full-time.
The successful candidate will be an experienced infrastructure professional capable of working independently with minimal ramp-up time, combined with a strong passion for mentoring, coaching, and developing internal staff through daily operational activities, runbooks, and documentation.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Infrastructure Management: Administer, monitor, and maintain physical and virtual enterprise servers, ensuring peak performance and security.
- Network & Security Admin: Configure, monitor, and troubleshoot enterprise network devices, including routers, switches, firewalls, VPNs, and wireless infrastructure.
- Knowledge Transfer & Mentorship: Provide daily, hands-on mentoring and training for an internal Infrastructure Specialist to ensure a highly successful transition of responsibilities.
- Documentation & SOPs: Develop robust standard operating procedures (SOPs), technical runbooks, and knowledge transfer materials so your expertise remains behind.
- Data Protection: Manage and monitor enterprise data backups to guarantee business continuity, reliability, and smooth disaster recovery testing.
- Physical Operations: Maintain computer room infrastructure, network cabling, and hardware/software asset management (requires the physical capability to lift up to 40 lbs).
- Escalation Support: Provide helpdesk escalation support during peak operational periods or staff shortages when necessary.
- Operational Availability: Perform necessary non-business hour maintenance, upgrades, and critical troubleshooting activities as required.
Technical Knowledge & Skills
- Systems: Expert knowledge of Windows Server administration, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
- Virtualization: Deep, extensive hands-on experience with virtualization platforms, specifically VMware and Hyper-V.
- Cloud: Proven experience supporting and administering Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 (M365) in hybrid cloud environments.
- Networking: Strong capability configuring and troubleshooting enterprise networking equipment (e.g., Cisco, Fortinet, Palo Alto).
- Soft Skills: Exceptional documentation habits, strong analytical problem-solving skills, and a clear, consultative approach to training junior/mid-level staff.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Experience: A minimum of 8 years of dedicated experience in enterprise IT infrastructure, server administration, and network management.
- Education: Bachelor’s or Associate's degree in Computer Science, IT, or a related field preferred. (Equivalent enterprise work experience will be strongly considered in lieu of formal education).
- Track Record: Demonstrated success in technical training, coaching, or leading operational handovers.
- Industry Preference: Experience working within manufacturing or global enterprise environments is highly preferred.
