About the Opportunity

Seeking a detail-oriented Collector I to join our Patient Financial Services team on a 3-month contract. This onsite position is responsible for resolving insurance and patient accounts while maximizing reimbursement through effective collections, account analysis, and appeals. The ideal candidate has prior hospital business office experience, understands revenue cycle processes, and has hands-on experience with EPIC Hyperspace.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage assigned accounts within designated work queues.
• Follow up with commercial insurance companies, government payors, and patients to resolve outstanding balances.
• Review claims and ensure accurate reimbursement according to contract rates using contract management tools.
• Research and initiate appeals for underpayments while meeting timely filing requirements.
• Process and respond to payer and patient correspondence promptly.
• Escalate billing, coding, and reimbursement issues when appropriate.
• Interpret Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) and Electronic Remittance Advices (ERAs).
• Accurately document all account activity in the patient accounting system.
• Maintain accurate insurance plan coding and account records.
• Establish payment arrangements with patients when appropriate.
• Review accounts for applicable discounts, cash rates, or special pricing.
• Assist with bankruptcy and deceased patient account processing as needed.
• Maintain a strong understanding of the healthcare revenue cycle from Patient Access through Patient Financial Services.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• EPIC Hyperspace experience is REQUIRED.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of one (1) year of hospital business office experience or equivalent healthcare collections experience; strong customer service experience will also be considered.
• Basic knowledge of insurance plans, hospital reimbursement methodologies, and/or ICD-10 and CPT coding.
• Understanding of managed care contracts and reimbursement processes.
• Knowledge of hospital billing forms (UB-04 and HCFA-1500).
• Familiarity with commercial and government payors, including Medicare, Medi-Cal, Medicare Advantage, TriCare, HMOs, PPOs, POS, EPOs, IPAs, Covered California, and capitation plans.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.

Preferred Skills

• Experience interpreting EOBs and ERAs.
• Knowledge of revenue cycle operations and patient accounting systems.
• Experience with insurance appeals and payment resolution.
