Job DescriptionWe are seeking an experienced Embedded Software Architect to lead the architecture, design, development, integration, and validation of embedded software for Caterpillar’s next-generation heavy equipment and machine control systems. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with Embedded C/C , Linux/RTOS, real-time systems, software architecture, and embedded communication protocols.
The engineer will work closely with hardware, systems, controls, cybersecurity, functional safety, and test teams to develop scalable, reliable, and production-ready embedded software solutions.
Responsibilities- Define and lead software architecture for embedded electronic control systems.
- Translate system and customer requirements into software architecture and detailed technical designs.
- Design, develop, and review real-time embedded software using C/C .
- Develop software for embedded Linux and/or RTOS-based platforms.
- Lead software integration across application, middleware, hardware, and platform layers.
- Define software interfaces, APIs, communication mechanisms, and system-level architectures.
- Work with embedded communication protocols including CAN, J1939, TCP/IP, and Ethernet.
- Support AUTOSAR-based software architecture and development where applicable.
- Develop and maintain software requirements with appropriate traceability.
- Perform design reviews, code reviews, architecture reviews, and technical assessments.
- Guide engineers in software design, coding standards, debugging, and development best practices.
- Lead complex software debugging, root-cause analysis, and performance optimization.
- Support software verification, validation, unit testing, integration testing, and system testing.
- Collaborate with hardware and controls engineers for hardware/software integration.
- Support functional safety, cybersecurity, reliability, and production-readiness activities.
- Develop architecture documentation, UML diagrams, interface specifications, and software design documents.
- Participate in Agile/Scrum or SAFe development processes and technical planning.
- Mentor software engineers and provide technical leadership across development teams.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Software Engineering, or related field.
- 8 years of embedded software development experience, with experience in software architecture or technical leadership.
- Strong hands-on programming experience in C/C .
- Strong experience with Embedded Linux and/or RTOS.
- Experience designing software architectures for embedded and distributed systems.
- Strong understanding of multithreading, concurrency, IPC, memory management, and real-time software.
- Experience with CAN/CAN-FD, J1939, Ethernet, TCP/IP, or similar communication protocols.
- Experience with Git and modern software development practices.
- Experience with debugging and profiling embedded applications.
- Strong understanding of software development lifecycle, requirements, design, implementation, integration, and validation.
- Experience with software design patterns and UML-based architecture/design.
- Experience with AUTOSAR.
- Experience in automotive, off-highway, construction equipment, industrial automation, robotics, or heavy machinery.
- Experience with CANoe/CANalyzer.
- Knowledge of functional safety and cybersecurity concepts.
- Experience with GNSS, IMU, sensors, machine controls, autonomy, or remote-control systems.
- Experience with CI/CD, automated testing, and Test-Driven Development.
- Experience with Yocto, Buildroot, Docker, or embedded Linux build systems.
- Experience working with globally distributed engineering teams.
