Position Summary

The Sleep Away Camp Lifeguard supports the Girl Scouts of Connecticut’s mission by ensuring a safe, well-supervised, and engaging aquatics environment for all campers and staff. This role is responsible for guarding recreational swim times, supporting small watercraft activities (when assigned), and assisting with general camp programming. Lifeguards ensure that all aquatics operations follow State Licensing Regulations, ACA Standards, Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints, and GSOFCT Policies.

Essential Responsibilities

Aquatics Program Delivery

  • Participate in the daily implementation of the aquatics program, including swimming, boating, and alternative (rainy-day) activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the Waterfront Director to ensure high-quality, progression-based aquatics experiences for campers.
  • Assist with supervising aquatics activities to support camper engagement, skill-building, and safety.

Safety & Compliance

  • Assist the Waterfront Director in enforcing all waterfront safety procedures, emergency protocols, and risk management practices.
  • Participate in all required pre-camp training, including aquatics in-service training and swim assessment protocol training.
  • Conduct and support swim assessments for all campers to determine skill classifications.
  • Monitor water quality and report concerns to the Waterfront Director.
  • Maintain health and safety standards for campers, staff, and self at all times.

Supervision & Camper Support

  • Provide direct supervision and care to campers during aquatics periods and other assigned activities.
  • Participate in unit and all-camp programming as assigned.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and model positive, inclusive behavior toward campers and staff.

Operational Responsibilities

  • Report accidents and complete incident reports promptly and accurately.
  • Care for and properly use aquatics equipment, reporting needed repairs or replacements.
  • Participate in emergency drills, including aquatics-specific simulations.
  • Support opening and closing procedures of the waterfront and overall camp season.
  • Maintain accurate records, reports, and maintenance requests as assigned.
  • Fulfill assigned evening unit counselor responsibilities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & Competencies

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Strong swimming and lifeguarding skills with the ability to demonstrate required competencies.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of campers and staff in an inclusive manner.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Experience in aquatics, youth programming, camping, or recreation is preferred.
  • Ability to remain alert, focused, and responsive in an outdoor waterfront environment.

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

Certifications

  • Current Lifeguard Certification with waterfront module.
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certification required.
  • Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Room and board provided as part of employment.
