This position requires mandatory staff training Saturday, July 25 & Sunday, July 26. The position covers two weeks of camp.

Camp Beyond Binary start date session one: Saturday, August 1 and session two: Saturday, August 8

Job Summary: 

The Wellness Supervisor is responsible for offering professional support to the mental health and emotional well-being of campers and staff. The Wellness Supervisor will provide positive mental health assessment and guidance within their scope of practice. The Wellness Supervisor will be informed, aware of, and responsive to medical information provided by the Health Supervisor regarding campers’ medical histories and medications relevant to their mental health. The Wellness Supervisor will make observations and engage socially, in small groups, and one on one, in ways that support strategies for positive coping skills and that reduce anxiety, social isolation, depression, and that may offer support to individuals with gender dysphoria.  

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties as assigned) 

 

  • Provide mental health assessment and guidance that supports the positive mental health and emotional well-being of campers and staff.   

  • Offering an accessible and friendly presence, the Wellness Supervisor will make observations and offer strategies that support mental well-being. 

  • Communicate about situations and/or dynamics and instances of note with the Beyond Director, Camp Health Supervisor, and parents/guardians as needed. Documenting any instances, in collaboration with the Camp Health Supervisor, where applicable. 

  • Communicate with the Beyond Director any instances where intervention from a camper’s parent or guardian is advisable. 

  • Be prepared to offer suggestions of resources or “next steps” for wraparound support of campers/families and/or staff outside of the camp setting. 

  • Deliver an orientation session during pre-camp staff training on mental health; including, an outline of health disparities faced by a majority of LGBTQ youth; how to identify indicators of stress and/or poor mental health, including negative coping and self-harm; ensure the camp staff know how to reach the Wellness Supervisor when needed. 

  • Offer at least two group activities per week designed to support campers' mental health and well-being. 

  • Offer accessible resources or activities that offer support to the mental health of staff. 

  • Contact parents concerning the status of their child’s mental health during any notable instance, such as prolonged refusal of meals, panic attack, or harm to self or others. 

  • Practice confidentiality and utmost discretion with knowledge of camper mental health history. 

  • Honor and respect camper and staff name and pronoun(s) as important contributing factors to overall positive mental well-being. 

  • Acting as a leader and role model to other staff members through use of excellent customer service skills, maintaining a professional demeanor and positive, upbeat disposition, and communicating with other staff members in a way that is positive and encouraging. 

  • Model self-care among staff and campers. This includes taking all (mandatory) breaks, adequate hydration, attaining a reasonable amount of sleep, balanced nutrition, and caring for one’s own emotional wellness. 

  • Adhere to all COVID-19 protocols required by NYS Department of Health and GSNYPENN. 

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualification Standards:

  • Be at least 23 years of age.
  • Believe in the Beyond Program mission.
  • Have completed undergraduate degree and are currently enrolled as a graduate student in the fields of social work, psychology, or therapy.
  • Hold one of the following: Masters in Social Work (LCSW), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Clinical Psychologist (Psy. D.), Counseling Psychologist (Ed. D)
  • Knowledge of and experience working with LGBTQ youth.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and details simultaneously.
  • Awareness and understanding of chronic health conditions that disproportionately impact LGBTQ youth is helpful (gender dysphoria, anxiety, depression, self-harm, eating disorders, etc.)
  • Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the camp community.
  • Ability to work productively in a fast paced, stressful environment.

 

 

Physical and Mental Requirements:

 

Light mental and visual attention is required for performing work where there is some variety, but actions taken, and decisions made are limited to a few possibilities. Work requires some coordination with others.

 

Physical Exertion:

 

  • Exerts up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
  • Walking on uneven terrain, up and down hills for distances up to ½ mile
  • Endurance to meet emergency needs
  • Ability (and willingness) to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours

Salary : $1,000 - $1,200
