Position Summary

The Health Assistant, under the Health Supervisor and Camp Director, promotes the overall health, safety, and sanitation of campers, staff, and the camp environment. Working under the standing orders and technical direction of a licensed physician, and in alignment with GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints and the GSGLA Camp Lakota Health Manual, the Health Assistant plays a key role in day-to-day health operations. Responsibilities include assisting with the distribution of medications, supporting campers with health-related needs, and helping to maintain a clean and safe camp environment. This role is essential in fostering a healthy and supportive experience for all members of the camp community.

GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles’ Camp Lakota is a state-of-the-art, recently updated residential camp. Located just 90 miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a zipline, low ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery. 

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Assist in providing health care to meet individual needs of camp staff and campers.
    • Assist in the daily medication distribution and management.
    • Provide care as needed for both staff and campers seeking medical attention under the direction and supervision of the health supervisor, within the scope of their skills, the camp’s health care manual and treatment plan.
    • Assist in the supervision of both staff and campers while in the care of the health team. 
    • Provide CPR and First Aid coverage as needed at designated times and locations. 
    • Collaborate with the health supervisor, administrative camp staff and other medical staff as necessary to ensure medical needs are met. 
  2. Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff. 
    • Assist in setting up the camp health center under the supervision of the health supervisor and administrative team.
    • In collaboration with the camp director and health supervisor, identify inventory needs and order and maintain stock of all necessary medical supplies and equipment identified in the camp health care manual. 
  3. Assist in the maintenance of accurate and detailed medical records according to state, American Camp Association, and GSGLA standards. 
    • Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file.
    • Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.
    • Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms.
    • Record and maintain caregiver communication logs. 
  4. Assist in overseeing First Aid procedures and supplies
    • Prepare and distribute first aid kits as needed throughout the camp. 
    • Ensure supplies in first aid kits are stocked in accordance with the camp healthcare manual and distributed as needed. 
  5. Assist in screening all campers and staff upon arrival at camp.
    • Verify health history and examination.
    • Verify emergency authorization.
    • Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable disease.
    • Conduct a health assessment.
    • Secure all medications used by campers and staff. 
  6. Assist in supervising sanitary conditions throughout camp. 
    • Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the health supervisor and Camp Director.
  7. Participate and effectively communicate as a member of the camp team. 
    • Address staff and campers’ health concerns in a timely manner and report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director.
    • Serve as a role model through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
    • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special programs, sleep outs, and other all-camp activities and camp functions. 
  8. Other duties as assigned. 
Qualifications:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be 18 years of age or older. 
  • Experience in both child and adult illness/injury care.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Ability to drive, possession of a valid driver’s license, and clean DMV record.
  • Must be available for 10 weeks of overnight camp (June 2026 – Mid-August 2026) and training dates that will be scheduled prior to camp.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position’s employment dates. Training will be available.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association. 
  • Ability to live onsite acting in an on-duty capacity for the duration of the camp season. 
  • Ability to lift up to 45 pounds periodically. 
  • Must possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience

  • Documented experienced teaching or interacting in youth programming
  • Prior experience assisting with healthcare, first aid, or youth health support.
  • Comfortable working with children and adolescents in camp, school, or recreational settings.
  • Basic knowledge of first aid, medication administration, and health protocols.

GSGLA Employee Requirements

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned
  • Must successfully complete a Live Scan and background check
