What are the responsibilities and job description for the Auto Mechanic position at Gilmer County Government?
General Nature of Work
The Auto Mechanic will be responsible for repairing and maintaining a variety of vehicles for the county. They will evaluate the condition of the vehicle and will work to ensure that the vehicle is in peak condition for county use.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs engine, exhaust electrical, brake, and transmission repairs on assigned vehicles.
- Conducts scheduled preventive maintenance functions, including checking the condition and operation of batteries, tires, lights, transmissions, exhaust systems, and brakes.
- Repairs lighting systems on vehicles.
- Inspects and repairs fuel systems on vehicles, including repairing carburetors and fuel injectors.
- Inspects and repairs air-conditioning systems, including repairing Freon leaks, compressor lines, wires, evaporator cores, and compressor components.
- Inspects and repairs heating systems, including repairing heater lines and cores.
- Performs major and minor engine repairs, including repairing pumping and electrical systems.
- Manages the departmental work order system; orders and stores parts and delegates repair tasks.
- Performs emergency repairs on vehicles as necessary; troubleshoots equipment failures at job sites.
- Maintains the shop and assigned tools.
- Completes and signs work orders according to service rendered.
- Additional duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment.
- Knowledge of preventive and corrective maintenance procedures.
- Knowledge of the operating principles and mechanical repair of engines.
SKILLS
- Skill in diagnosing defects in automotive equipment.
- Skill in repairing vehicles.
- Skill in welding and fabricating parts.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
ABILITIES
- Ability to plan and prioritize to meet county deadlines
- Ability to prepare documents in response to complaints and inquiries
- Ability to examine vehicle diagnostics for accuracy and completeness
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- High School Diploma or GED
- 1-2 years of working within an auto repair or collision center is preferred, but not required.

Physical Requirements: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).
Work Environment: The work is typically performed in a shop or outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, grease, irritating chemicals, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather. The work may require protective devices such as masks and gloves.
