What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wood Finishing Supervisor position at Gilbert Displays?
We are seeking an experienced Wood Finishing Supervisor to lead and grow our paint and finish department. The ideal candidate will have deep technical knowledge of wood finishes, coatings, stains, and paints, with hands-on experience mixing colors, prepping stains, and spraying using HVLP (High Volume Low Pressure) spray guns. Experience with patina and specialty metal finishes is a strong plus.
This leader will ensure consistent quality, smooth workflow, and timely delivery while mentoring and developing the finishing team. You’ll be both a subject matter expert and team leader who stands shoulder-to-shoulder with your team when needed.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise, coach, and train finishing team members to maintain high performance and craftsmanship.
- Set daily/weekly production goals in coordination with production planners.
- Monitor productivity and quality standards; address performance issues constructively.
- Ensure department adheres to all safety protocols and best practices.
Technical Finishing Expertise
- Mix and match paint colors, stains, and special finishes to meet design specifications.
- Prepare wood surfaces (sanding, patching, cleaning) for application.
- Apply finishes using HVLP spray guns and other appropriate tools.
- Troubleshoot color, adhesion, or finish defects and implement corrective actions.
- Support patina and specialty finishes on metal components when required.
Workflow & Quality Control
- Collaborate with production and quality teams to schedule jobs and prioritize work.
- Inspect finished products to ensure compliance with specification, texture, color, and sheen.
- Maintain clean, organized finishing areas and proper inventory of finishing supplies.
Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate finishing processes and recommend ways to improve quality and efficiency.
- Stay updated on finishing products, coatings technology, and industry best practices.
Skills & Qualifications
Required
- 5 years wood finishing experience, including hands-on painting, staining, and spraying.
- Proficiency with HVLP spray guns.
- Solid understanding of color mixing, stains, lacquers, top coats, and sealants.
- Strong leadership and communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Preferred
- Experience with patina and metal finishing techniques.
- Experience in architectural millwork or high-end custom woodwork.
