What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clinical Lab Assistant position at GILA REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER?
The Clinical Lab Assistant is responsible for processing specimens and loading instruments, assisting with specimen preparation, and sending out specimens for testing. S/he consults with phlebotomy staff about specimen requirements, ensures proper re-collections and processing, and performs phlebotomy when workload warrants. S/he performs waived testing, as well as various clerical duties, including answering the phone, and ordering supplies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Processes specimens: receives, spins, and packages specimens
- Performs waived testing
- Loads specimens on instruments
- Restocks and orders laboratory supplies
- Empties bio hazard waste and replaces containers
- Answers phone and faxes reports to providers
- Monitors pending logs
- Rotates sample storage
- Enters variances into MEDITECH Quality Reports
- Checks the phlebotomy orders for accuracy, corrects issues
- Monitors the return of send out tests, matching to the patient’s orders
- Trains new hires on LIS order entry, specimen receiving, looking up results
- Trains new hires in specimen processing
- Reconciles send out invoices with the LIS charges – when issues inform laboratory director for resolution
- Reviews failed fax report in LIS, resolves issues
- Create / update specimen processing procedures
- Performs phlebotomy draws as needed
EDUCATION & TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
- Minimum High School Diploma or GED
- AMT or ASCP CLA certification within 1 year of hire
- BLS certification within 3 months of hire
- Computer skills
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Phlebotomist experience preferred
