SAFETY DIRECTOR
Position Summary
The Safety Director is responsible for planning, implementing, and managing Georgia Development Partners' safety and health programs across all active construction operations. This is a working director role that combines administrative oversight with direct field involvement. The Safety Director operates with a high degree of independence and is expected to function as a subject matter expert, a field resource, and a program builder.
Essential Functions
Safety Program Management
- Develop, maintain, and enforce GDP's written safety programs, SOPs, and field compliance tools
- Conduct and document jobsite safety inspections across all active projects
- Maintain company OSHA recordkeeping (300/300A logs) and ensure timely incident reporting
- Lead incident investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective action follow-through
Training and Field Support
- Conduct new hire safety orientation and ensure onboarding compliance with GDP's established timeline and requirements
- Develop and deliver toolbox talks, task-level training, and equipment-specific safety instruction
- Provide real-time field support to superintendents and foremen on hazard recognition and corrective action
Workers' Compensation and Claims Management
- Manage workers' compensation claims from initial report through closure, coordinating with the carrier and legal counsel as appropriate
- Administer GDP's return-to-work and modified duty program
- Track claim activity and EMR trends; provide management with periodic loss run analysis
Subcontractor and Vendor Oversight
- Monitor subcontractor field compliance and document deficiencies
Reporting and Administration
- Maintain safety documentation
- Prepare and present safety performance reports to management
- Track and manage required employee certifications, licenses, and training records
- Represent GDP in OSHA inspections and agency inquiries
Minimum Qualifications
- Five or more years of safety management experience in heavy civil, underground utility, or site work construction
- Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR Part 1926, with particular depth in subpart P (excavations) and subpart Q (concrete and masonry)
- Demonstrated experience managing workers' compensation claims
- Proficiency with field management platforms such as HCSS
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Valid driver's license ability to travel across multiple job sites regularly
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST)
- Experience in water and sewer infrastructure or underground utility work
- Bilingual (English/Spanish)
- Experience supporting prequalification with general contractors or program managers
Physical Requirements
This position requires regular fieldwork on active heavy civil construction sites. The Safety Director must be able to walk uneven terrain, enter and exit excavations, work in confined spaces, and perform inspections in all weather conditions. Ability to stand, walk, and observe field operations for extended periods is required.
