OBJECTIVE:

A Secondary Science Teacher creates and delivers science curriculum, instructs students in disciplines like biology or chemistry, conducts lab experiments, and assesses student performance through assignments and tests. Key responsibilities include fostering critical thinking, maintaining a safe learning environment, collaborating with parents and colleagues, and participating in ongoing professional development to improve teaching methods.

The position will involve participating in activities beyond the school day, such as faculty meetings, campus event nights, and before- or after-school tutorials. Some after-school or evening events, such as parent-teacher conferences, are required.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Develop and implement science lesson plans for various subjects such as biology, chemistry, physics, and earth science.
  • Teach scientific concepts and principles, using engaging techniques appropriate for diverse learning needs.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments and hands-on activities, ensuring all safety precautions are followed.
  • Evaluate student performance through quizzes, assignments, projects, and exams to monitor progress.
  • Provide guidance and support to students in their academic and personal lives.
  • Communicate with parents and guardians regarding student performance and concerns.
  • Create a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment for all students.
  • Supervise and instruct students on the proper use of scientific equipment and chemicals in the laboratory.
  • Stay updated with the latest developments in science and educational methods.
  • Participate in professional development programs, conferences, and meetings to enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Collaborate with other teachers and department staff to improve the science curriculum and share best practices.
  • Tutor students on an individual basis.
  • *Perform other duties as assigned or required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructions and curriculum development: Develop and implement lesson plans and educational activities that align with state standards and curriculum requirements. For middle school, this may involve teaching a broad range of scientific concepts, while high school often requires specialization in a specific subject.

Classroom and lab management: Maintain a safe and orderly classroom and laboratory, enforcing all health and safety procedures during experiments and hands-on activities.

Student Assessment: Administer and grade assignments, tests, and projects. Evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback to support their growth.

Communication and collaboration: Effectively communicate with students, parents, and other school staff regarding student progress and concerns. Collaborate with colleagues to develop curriculum and interdisciplinary projects.

Student support and mentorship: Guide and support students’ academic, social, and personal development. Adapt teaching methods and materials to meet diverse learning needs and accommodate different learning styles.

Professional development: Stay current with the latest scientific discoveries and educational best practices through workshops, conferences, and ongoing learning.

Extracurricular involvement: Sponsor science-related clubs, coach academic teams, or organize science fairs to engage students further.

Empathy: Ability to connect with and motivate students from varied backgrounds.

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: Bachelor’s degree in science or education with a science endorsement.

Preferred: Master’s degree in science or education with a science endorsement.

Required: Minimum three (3) years of prior teaching experience in science.

Preferred: Valid Texas Certification in your area of instruction.
