ABOUT THE JOB:

Tends fabricating machines such as cutoff saws, shears, rolls, brakes, presses, forming machines, spinning machines, and punch, that cut, shape, and bend metal plates, sheets, tubes, and structures by performing the following duties:

Essential Functions & Major Responsibilities

• Operates Fab Shop and Machine Shop machinery and equipment.
• Reads job specifications to determine machine adjustments and material requirements
• Sets stops or guides to specified length as indicated by scale, rule or template
• Positions workpiece against stops or aligns layout marks with die or blade
• Pushes button or depresses pedal to activate machine
• Observes machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunction
• Measures workpiece dimensions to determine accuracy of machine operation
• Removes burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from workpiece
• Performs minor machine maintenance such as oiling machines, dies, or workpieces
• Sets up and performs maintenance on fab and machine shop machines and performs burning work
• Operates any equipment needed to perform job
• Performs related duties as assigned by supervision
• Regular, reliable and predictable attendance is necessary in order to perform the essential functions of this position

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to read and interpret metal rule
• Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Education/Experience

• High School diploma or general education degree (GED); or three to six months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

• Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, Stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized. (This factor is important if the amount and kind of climbing required exceeds that required for ordinary locomotion.)
• Standing/Sit: Remaining upright in a stationary position, particularly for sustained periods
• Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; those activities where detailed or important spoken instructions must be conveyed to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly
• Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and making fine discriminations in sound.
• Repetitive Motions: Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers such as operating and cleaning machines

• Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward downward of outward
• Walking: Moving about to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or moving from one work site to another

• Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with whole hand or arm as operating machines and material
• Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
• Lifting: Raising object from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position to position (this factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles)

Physical Requirements

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Visual Acuity

The worker is required to have visual acuity to operate motor vehicles or havey equipment.

Vision Requirements

Over 2/3 of the time:

• The worker is required to have close vision (Clear vision at 20 inches or less)
• The worker is required to have the ability to adjust visual focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus
• The worker is required to have depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships)

Less than 1/3 of the time:

• The worker is required to have color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)
• The worker is required to have peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point)
• The worker is required to have distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)

Over 2/3 of the time:

• The worker is subject to noise: There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
• The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals
