WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
The Laboratory Architect/Planner is responsible for successfully leading project efforts, particularly those weighted toward the programming, planning, and design of laboratory facilities. This role regularly communicates directly with clients and user groups to understand project requirements and develop trusting relationships.
We are open to crafting a final title/position description based on the right candidate and are open to varying ranges of experience, provided it includes prior experience working on laboratory projects.
Responsibilities of the Role:
- As a key member of our multidisciplinary team, you must be a collaborative and effective communicator who thrives in a team approach. Strong interpersonal skills are required to collaborate with both internal and client-facing teams.
- Meets with clients to assess needs and develops an associated project program.
- Completes tasks associated with programming and concept planning, including the ability to delegate work to a support team.
- Prepares conceptual design ideas, 2D and 3D presentation materials, independently and/or with assistance from other team members.
- Develops ideas from conceptual design through construction documentation and ensures proper coordination and design input with the other disciplines on the team.
- Participates in research, selection, and specification of laboratory-related architectural components.
- Oversees the development of construction drawings and specifications that incorporate client, regulatory, and industry standards.
- Mentors, motivates, and inspires junior staff and assists in their professional development without the need for additional oversight.
- Attends industry-specific social and educational events to stay up to date on the best practices of architectural design and lab planning and for networking and professional development.
- Travels as required for client development and project execution.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Architecture, or Master of Architecture, or a degree in a related field with demonstrated laboratory planning experience.
- 7 years of working on laboratory spaces in a Project Architect and/or Lab Planner role.
- Proven track record of successfully delivering architectural projects from concept to completion, demonstrating a comprehensive understanding of building codes, construction materials, and industry best practices.
- Experience leading design, programming, and planning meetings.
- Proficiency with lab-specific code, furniture, equipment, finishes, and NIH design guidelines/best practices.
- Technical proficiency in Revit and MS Office software.
- Experience with Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
- Excellent communication skills – including speaking, writing, and graphic communication - are a must. This includes being able to speak confidently and concisely, leading conversations in the programming and planning phases of a project, and developing materials to support those conversations.
- Flexibility to travel (occasionally to moderate, depending on project location)
- Architectural registration or documented progress towards achievement is preferred.
