Job Description:

Michigan School for the Deaf (MSD) is a program that serves Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and their families throughout the State of Michigan. Programming and services are provided to both day students and students in our student housing. This position will report to the Youth Dorm Manager at Michigan School for the Deaf.

The position of Activities and Athletic Coordinator manages, coordinates, supervises, and oversees the after-school activities available to MSD students in coordination with the Youth Dorm Manager. These activities include sports programs, high school class activities (including working with and providing guidance to class sponsors), and clubs such as Chess, Yearbook, Drama and Singing Hands (including approving the content of the presentations).

This role supervises coaches and activity leaders, ensures compliance with MHSAA rules, and works closely with school leadership to support the Activities Program. The Coordinator maintains regular on-campus hours, attends all school athletic events, including out-of-state competitions— and remains available during evenings and weekends. Key responsibilities include building positive relationships with parents and community partners, managing the department budget, processing coach invoices, and developing long-term plans to strengthen programs and increase student engagement.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee, schedule, and coordinate all athletic and activities programming. • Supervises the Activities and Athletic Program at the Michigan School for the Deaf. • Establishes and enforces the expectations and parameters for coaches, sponsors, and activity leaders. • Promote good public relations by teaming with parents, MSD stakeholders, our league teams, and MHSAA.

• Promote positive public relations by collaboratingwith parents, MSD stakeholders, our league teams, and Michigan High School Athletic Association.
• Serve in an administrative capacity as it relates to the Activities Program for the Michigan School for the Deaf working closely with the Head of School, Youth Dorm Manager, and Principal, meeting monthly to discuss activities department concerns.
• Oversee the submission and verification of coach’s invoices and accompanying activities logs.

• Maintain regular time on campus (Sunday through Thursdays 2-10pm) which will include holding office hours, returning phone calls, responding to email, and meetings with staff. • Attend all on campus and on campus athletic events representing MSD, including out of state competitions.

• Ensure availability during evening and weekend for athletic and activity related events. • Manage finances as they pertain to the activities department, manage the Activities Department budget and ensure financial oversight oversee the other revolving funds under his/her direction.

• Develop long range plans to support program growth, ensure development of programs and student engagement, and overall success.
• The ability to adhere to all Michigan High School Athletic Association rules and maintain the school’s membership in good standing.

State of Michigan Employees/MSD Contracted Employees: Position duties should not conflict with work schedule, if so, annual leave must be requested. If absent, you will not be paid for that day.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants who, in addition to meeting the minimum qualifications, possess one or more of the following:

• Previous experience supporting or managing youth focused programs in a school or related setting.
• Knowledge of developing Sports and after school activities for Deaf and hard of hearing students from preschool to 26 years of age.

• Experience working with deaf/hard of hearing or multi-disabled students. • Ability to communicate via American Sign Language (ASL) is highly preferred but is not required. A candidate who is not proficient in ASL must follow the MSD Language Policy and become proficient within a specified period of time. • Successful experience working with high school deaf and hard of hearing age students. • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, and deaf community.

• Ability to communicate effectively both in American Sign Language and in English in writing. • Demonstrated ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance and strong organizational skills.

• Knowledge of various coaching methods, officiating rules, and regulations. • Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the program.

Work Hours & Total Compensation:

• Activities Director will work from August 1-July 1 48 weeks of the year. Time off in one-week blocks per the MSD calendar noted as other will be during Christmas Break, Spring Break, and two weeks in the Summer {without payor available paid time off may be used}.

• Sunday- Thursday 2-10pm, during the evening for school activities, some weekends. • Payments are made on a bi-weekly basis with invoice submitted to Business Office. • Salary is $48,000

This is a one-year contracted position and pay will be determined based upon experience. The position will be renewed annually with the mutual agreement of both parties.
