What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Aide IV position at Genesee County Road Commission?
GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Construction Department Manager, this position is a Senior Engineering Aide. Acts as a survey technician and senior inspector person on road construction projects. May lead other employees or instruct new employees in road construction design and construction activities.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES
1. Assists a survey crew in conducting preliminary survey involving establishment of vertical and horizontal control, obtaining cross section data and topographic data.
2. Assists with construction layout survey involving controls, layout staking, establishment of grades and final field measurements of completed work.
3. Performs construction inspection and minor project management duties on major complex construction projects and subdivisions being constructed by contractors to assure compliance with plans and specifications.
4. Operates test equipment in the field and laboratory to assure material compliance with project specifications.
5. Coordinates construction with utilities and the public.
6. Verifies placement of construction signs and barricades to assure traffic safety.
7. Performs field-testing an sampling of construction materials.
8. Assists the project engineer in preparation of contractor payment estimates, authorization and other reports and letters.
9. Performs plan drafting for road and bridge projects. Reduces field notes, plots cross sections, computes earth work and other complex quantities. Operates copy machines, maintains and marks records and files of completed projected and roadway information files.
10. Assist in preparation of preliminary design investigations and cost estimates and performs minor design functions.
11. Assist in performing reviews of consultant engineering plans and quantities and assists in the preparation of bid proposals and bid tabulations.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, kneel, walk distances in excess of one mile, negotiate uneven and/or irregular terrain, use hands and arms to hold, reach, lift and carry loads in excess of 40 lbs., perform strenuous and vigorous movements such as but not limited to driving stakes in hard soil, or feel objects and talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust and focus.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma/GED. Ten (10) years of experience as an Engineering Aide overseeing Highway Construction of State/Federal Aid projects in accordance with MDOT procedures or equivalent. One (1) year of computer experience, with specific emphasis on CAD applications. Valid Michigan Driver’s License. Associate Degree in Construction Technology preferred.
