What are the responsibilities and job description for the Engineering Aide II position at Genesee County Road Commission?
Under the general supervision of the department manager, performs routine drafting, construction and permit inspection, surveying and traffic engineering tasks.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES
1. Performs various duties on a survey crew involving measuring, staking, operating a level rod, making computations and sketches, preparing survey notes, operating and maintaining survey equipment and devices, as well as clearing brush to establish survey lines and acts as a flag person to support crew safety.
2. Assists with traffic engineering studies and the preparation of recommendation reports for traffic signals and signing, speed limits, turning movements, and safety related items. Analyzes accident reports to determine hazardous areas needing further study. Places traffic counters for recording traffic volumes.
3. Performs construction inspection on all related facilities relative to road, bridge, permit, and subdivision construction to assure compliance with plans, policies and specifications.
4. Reviews, issues, and inspects permit applications and permitted projects.
5. Maintains records and files for accident reports, traffic counts, sign placement, card file, permits, bridge and culvert inspection, construction archive and the like.
6. Perform material inspection including review of density testing and concrete testing to assure material compliance with project specifications.
7. Prepares Inspectors Daily Reports (IDR’s) including record keeping, measurements, constructed quantities, force account activities, and preparation of “as built” plans.
8. Performs routine plan drafting for road and bridges, updates township, right-of-way, traffic and certification maps. Reduces field notes, plots cross-sections, computes earth work and other quantities, operates copy machines and maintain records and files.
1. Performs culvert inspections and records pertinent data and observations for staff engineers.
2. Assists in scoping future design/construction projects by providing quantity calculations and cost estimates.

Understand complex oral and written directions. Make decisions in accordance with laws, ordinances, plans, specifications and policies. Basic knowledge of personal computers.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, process correspondence and write memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one or group situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding and carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problem situations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High School Diploma/GED. One (1) year of experience as a civil engineering technician or equivalent is desirable. Associate degree in Civil Engineering preferred. Knowledge of computer software with emphasis in Microsoft Office applications. Valid Michigan Driver’s License.
