Job: Controller
Scope of Responsibility:
The Controller is responsible for leading and directing the organization's accounting function and strategy. They oversee the design and operation of accounting systems, procedures, policies, and controls across the organization. This role implements controls and policies regarding financial reporting and serves as a business partner with affiliates to ensure accounting functions are accurate, timely, and compliant.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Leads by example, driving a values-based culture while shaping and executing strategies that advance long-term organizational goals.
- Manages workflow of direct reports while providing guidance on complex issues.
Essential Functions
- Partner with affiliates to provide financial insight, guidance, and support for decision-making and performance improvement.
- Lead and direct the organization's accounting operations, ensuring effective management of the general ledger, reporting, and reconciliation processes across all affiliates.
- Oversee the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of accounting systems, policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance across multiple entities.
- Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring the integrity of financial statements and adherence to reporting deadlines.
- Prepare and review financial statements, reports, and supporting schedules, ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards and internal policies.
- Lead and coordinate annual financial audit activities, including preparation and review of audit schedules and documentation.
- Establish, monitor, and ensure compliance with established accounting policies and internal control requirements, addressing gaps or risks proactively.
- Drive continuous improvement in accounting operations and reporting processes to enhance efficiency and scalability.
- Mentor and develop accounting team members, fostering professional growth, accountability, and operational excellence.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field AND 10 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Certified Public Accountant preferred.
- 5 years of experience directly supervising staff with increasing responsibility.
- Experience leading accounting functions within the engineering, professional services, or construction industries preferred.
- Public accounting experience preferred.
Technical Skills & Abilities:
- Deep understanding of GAAP, including percentage of completion revenue recognition and other technical accounting requirements to ensure accurate financial reporting and analysis.
- Proficiency with both general ledger and project accounting, including processes to close the books.
- Expertise in preparing and analyzing financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
- Strong expertise in designing, implementing, and maintaining internal control systems and procedures leveraging efficient processes and technology to ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data.
- Thorough understanding of relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.
- Proficiency with accounting software systems and other relevant technologies.
- In-depth understanding of organizational operations and their financial implications to support sound business decisions.
- Strong and influential interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.
- Recognized as an empathetic leader fostering engagement, trust, accountability, and the development of staff.
- Demonstrated customer-focused and responsive approach to both people management and internal service delivery.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
- Ability to work on computer for extended periods of time.
- Ability to sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
Travel:
- Limited travel required.
