Job Summary

The Electrical Commissioning Technician is responsible for testing, inspecting, troubleshooting, and commissioning electrical systems to ensure they are installed, operated, and maintained in accordance with engineering specifications, industry standards, and safety requirements. This role supports the successful startup and energization of power generation, transmission, distribution, renewable energy, and industrial electrical systems while working closely with project managers, engineers, contractors, and clients.


Job Description

  • Perform commissioning activities on medium- and high-voltage electrical equipment and systems.
  • Execute electrical testing in accordance with project commissioning procedures and applicable standards.
  • Verify installation quality through inspections, functional testing, and equipment validation.
  • Commission equipment including:
    • Power transformers
    • Circuit breakers
    • Switchgear
    • Protective relays
    • Motor control centers (MCCs)
    • Variable frequency drives (VFDs)
    • SCADA and control systems
    • Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)
    • Power Panels
    • Motors and Pumps
  • Conduct insulation resistance, contact resistance, primary injection, secondary injection, transformer turns ratio (TTR), power factor, and other diagnostic electrical tests.
  • Perform protection and control testing, relay verification, and functional logic testing.
  • Troubleshoot electrical, control, and communication system issues during startup and commissioning.
  • Review engineering drawings, one-line diagrams, wiring schematics, cable schedules, and commissioning documentation.
  • Complete commissioning reports, test records, punch lists, and turnover documentation.
  • Ensure all testing complies with client specifications, project requirements, and applicable electrical codes.
  • Coordinate commissioning activities with construction teams, engineers, vendors, and client representatives.
  • Support equipment energization and system startup while maintaining strict safety protocols.
  • Participate in factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), and final system acceptance.
  • Maintain and calibrate electrical testing equipment.
  • Identify deficiencies and recommend corrective actions before system turnover.


Skills Required

  • 3–7 years of electrical testing and commissioning experience in the energy, utility, industrial, or renewable energy sectors.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical theory and power system fundamentals.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Experience using electrical testing equipment such as Omicron, Megger, Doble, or similar.
  • Knowledge of protection and control systems, including relay testing and protective device coordination.
  • Understanding of SCADA, PLC, HMI, and industrial communication protocols.
  • Familiarity with electrical codes, commissioning standards, and safety regulations.
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical, organizational, and documentation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate within multidisciplinary project teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    • NETA Level II, III, or IV Certification.
    • NCCER Certification.
    • OSHA 30-Hour Certification.
    • NFPA 70E Training.
    • First Aid/CPR Certification.
    • Experience with renewable energy facilities, substations, or utility-scale power projects.


Education/Training/Certifications

  • Associate degree, technical diploma, or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Systems, or a related field.


Additional Requirements

  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and on-call as project needs require.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, enter confined spaces (when qualified), and lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Commitment to following OSHA, NFPA, client, and company safety procedures, including the use of appropriate PPE and participation in safety meetings and job hazard analyses.


Pay Rate/Salary

  • Pay Rate $75 - $90/ hr (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to such factors as education, experience, skillset, and/or location)
