Overview
Garmin is seeking a full-time Product Designer 2 to join our Outdoor and Fitness group at our Olathe, KS location. You will be a part of a team designing user experiences for a highly diverse range of Garmin’s product interfaces including wearables, satellite communicators, golf, scuba diving, cycling, backcountry navigation, tactical tools and more. You will utilize a strong understanding of Figma’s Enterprise tools for design systems including variable usage and component design and use this knowledge to deploy solutions across a varied platform and product lines with complex needs. You will help audit, align, and build components and design elements that the Outdoor Fitness team will use at scale.
In this UX-focused role, you will be paired with a design mentor and be responsible for understanding, ideating, and creating compelling, well-crafted designs for new features and functions for many of our products. Success involves understanding and applying fundamental usability and user-centered design principles, working amongst many groups and stakeholders to hone your design, and guiding software user interface development, working closely with design leadership, software engineers, graphic artists, product managers, and other stakeholders of your assigned projects.

Essential Functions
- Research, design and prototype user experiences for new features and products in a timely and organized manner
- Communicate research and designs using mockups, story boarding, visual presentations and writing behavioral documentation
- Produce creative, simple and highly usable solutions for how products interact in response to human behavior
- Document clear, organized solutions that are highly understandable in flow, function and status by stakeholders, engineers, and unfamiliar eyes
- Work closely with design leadership, software engineers, graphic artists, product managers and other stakeholders of the assigned project in determining design direction
- Assist with new user interface testing and conduct usability tests to get feedback on new designs where applicable
- Collaborate with and communicate to teams within product design, software engineering and management to produce superior solutions
- Adapt designs as needed, expecting some ambiguity and change during a project
- Maintain and ensure user interface design and behavioral consistency across product types
- May contribute to advanced design research or concepting for new products or markets through research, prototyping, testing and open internal collaboration
- Remain current on user interface design trends and competitors’ designs
- Stay abreast with new prototyping, presentation or computer graphics techniques and software
- Communicate status of work clearly and provide visibility to supervisor
- May serve as mentor to designers with less experience (Product Designers 1)
- Bachelor’s Degree in Interactive Design, Human Factors, Visual Design or a degree with an equivalent curriculum that teaches user centered design principles AND a minimum of 1 year relevant work experience OR a minimum of 5 years equivalent combination of education and relevant experience performing the essential functions of the Garmin Product Designer role
- Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
- Proficiency and exceptional skills in creating research, flows and prototypes using tools such as Figma
- Demonstrates understanding and knowledge of good user interface design (consistency, simplicity, and usability).
- Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skill
- Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.5)
- Technical knowledge to bridge gaps between engineering and design environments
- Deep curiosity for learning and an excitement for solving challenging problems
- Passion for Garmin products or the experiences they seek to enhance
