What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lawn & Landscape Maintenance Crew Member position at Gardens by Oz?
About Us
We're a landscaping design-build and maintenance company that has served the Norfolk area for over 45 years. We're locally owned, woman-owned, and known for doing detailed work on properties our clients care about.
We're hiring a Maintenance Crew Member to join our field team. This role is focused on recurring lawn and landscape maintenance — mowing, edging, pruning, bed care, and mulching — on a regular route of residential and commercial properties.
This is hands-on, physically active outdoor work. It's a good fit for someone who takes pride in a sharp edge line and a clean property, and who wants to build a long-term trade career rather than just pick up a season of work.
What You'll Do
Mowing and turf
- Mow using walk-behind, push, and zero-turn mowers, following consistent patterns and mowing heights
- Trim around trees, beds, fences, posts, and structures without scarring bark or damaging plants
- Edge sidewalks, driveways, curbs, bed lines, and hardscape borders for a clean, defined finish
- Adjust approach for wet conditions, slopes, and irrigation heads
Pruning and bed care
- Prune shrubs, ornamentals, and perennials as directed by your crew lead, using proper technique for the plant and season
- Weed and clean out planting beds, remove spent growth, and keep bed lines crisp
- Install mulch to specified depth, keeping it off trunks, siding, and hardscape
- Seasonal work including spring and fall cleanups, leaf removal, and cutbacks
Site finish and cleanup
- Blow off all hardscape, walkways, driveways, and entries before leaving — no clippings, no debris
- Bag or haul away debris per the job's scope
- Do a final walk of every property before leaving to catch anything missed
Equipment, vehicles, and materials
- Load, secure, and unload equipment and materials safely, including trailer loading and strapping
- Load, move, and place mulch, soil, and stone (routine lifting up to 50 lbs, occasionally more with help)
- Perform daily equipment checks — fuel, oil, blades, guards, tires — and report issues immediately rather than working around them
- Keep trucks, trailers, and equipment clean and organized at the end of each day
On the property
- Stay on schedule across multiple properties per day without cutting corners on quality
- Document work with before/after photos in CompanyCam
- Track your time and job status in Jobber
- Follow client-specific instructions (gate latches, pet protocols, parking, no-touch areas)
- Represent the company well: company shirt on at all times, professional and courteous with clients and neighbors, and follow our restroom-use policy on every property
- Follow all safety standards, including required PPE
Occasionally
- Support install crews on landscape and hardscape projects when maintenance schedules allow
Physical Requirements
You should be able to:
- Work outdoors year-round in heat, humidity, cold, and light rain
- Stand, walk, bend, kneel, and lift throughout an 8-hour workday
- Lift and carry up to 50 lbs routinely
- Operate handheld equipment with sustained vibration and noise
- Work around insects, pollen, poison ivy, and uneven terrain
What We're Looking For
Required
- Reliable — shows up on time, every scheduled day
- Attention to detail; you notice the missed strip, the crooked edge, the clippings on the walkway
- Physically able to perform the work described above
- Valid driver's license and a clean driving record
- Comfortable using a smartphone for schedules, time tracking, and job photos (we'll train you on Jobber and CompanyCam)
- Team-oriented, with respectful, professional communication
- Legally authorized to work in the United States
- Clean background record
Preferred
- Previous landscaping, lawn care, grounds, agricultural, or construction experience
- Experience operating commercial mowers and handheld equipment
- Plant knowledge or horticultural training
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly pay based on experience, with consistent hours through the season
- On-the-job training and paid skill development
- Company-sponsored certifications and industry courses
- Professional development assistance
- Retirement plan
- A clear path forward: crew member → senior crew member → crew lead, with pay increases tied to demonstrated skill
- Performance bonuses
Why Work Here
- A stable, long-standing local company with steady work
- Clear expectations and structured workdays — you'll know what's expected and how you're measured
- A team that cares about craftsmanship, not just getting through the route
- Real investment in your training and advancement
If you're reliable, hardworking, and take pride in leaving a property better than you found it, we'd like to hear from you.
Employment is contingent on satisfactory completion of a post-offer background check and, for positions involving operation of company vehicles, a motor vehicle record check.
