Position Summary

Supervision and Development of Student Staff

  • Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate Resident Assistants, and Head Resident Assistants.
  • Establish clear expectations and provide ongoing coaching related to community development, programming, on-call responsibilities, policy enforcement, performance management, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Conduct regular individual and team meetings to support staff development and alignment with departmental and University priorities.
  • Foster a student staff culture that promotes leadership, student engagement, personal growth, and community responsibility.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of departmental policies, procedures, and operational practices.

Community Development and Student Engagement

  • Create and maintain an accessible, welcoming, and inclusive residential community that supports student well-being, belonging, and success.
  • Build meaningful relationships with residents through intentional interactions, visibility, and engagement within the residential community.
  • Connect students to campus resources and support services while serving as a mentor, advocate, and advisor.
  • Maintain a consistent presence within the assigned residential area and support in the Office of Residence Life each week.
  • Utilize campus dining opportunities and other informal engagement methods to foster relationships with students and staff.

Student Accountability, Crisis Response, And On-Call Responsibilities

  • Participate in a year-round professional Residence Life on-call rotation, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and University break periods.
  • Uphold and enforce University policies and community standards through education, documentation, accountability meetings, sanctioning, and follow-up.
  • Respond appropriately to student concerns, emergencies, and crises, including mental health incidents, facilities emergencies, student welfare concerns, lockouts, and after-hours arrivals.
  • Collaborate with Campus Police and Safety, Counseling Services, Physical Plant, and other campus partners to support students and address community concerns.
  • Communicate professionally with parents and family members while adhering to FERPA and University policies.

Programming and Leadership Development

  • Advise and support student staff in the planning, implementation, and assessment of educational, social, and community-building programs.
  • Develop and facilitate initiatives that promote student engagement, leadership development, academic success, well-being, and community connection.
  • Manage and steward programming budgets in a fiscally responsible manner.

Residence Hall Operations and Facilities Management

  • Conduct ongoing assessments of residence hall facilities, including resident rooms, common spaces, and surrounding grounds.
  • Coordinate and oversee room condition reporting, health and safety inspections, fire drills, move-in, move-out, damage billing, and damage appeal processes.
  • Identify facility concerns and collaborate with appropriate departments to address maintenance needs and improvement projects.
  • Ensure a safe, clean, and functional living environment for residents.

Fraternity and Sorority Life Advising and Community Development

  • Serve as the primary staff advisor and liaison for the Fraternity and Sorority Life community.
  • Advise chapter leaders and governing councils on leadership development, organizational management, recruitment, risk management, and member accountability.
  • Coordinate educational initiatives related to leadership, academic achievement, community engagement, wellness, and responsible decision-making.
  • Support chapter recruitment, intake, new member education, and recognition activities in accordance with University policies and inter/national organization standards.
  • Monitor chapter performance and assist with assessment, reporting, and strategic planning efforts.
  • Collaborate with alumni advisors, national organization representatives, and campus partners to support chapter success and address concerns.
  • Facilitate community-wide initiatives that promote fraternity and sorority values, positive campus engagement, and student leadership development.

Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree is required.

Licenses and Certifications: A current valid driver’s license is required.

University Mission: Must be able to support and promote the University’s Mission.

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, counseling or a related area.

Also desirable: Experience in staff supervision, administration of residence hall operations, and facilitating student development programming activities.

Previous experience with living and learning communities, first-year experience programs, international and diverse populations is preferred.

Occasional evening and weekend hours are to be expected as a part of the on-call rotation. Must have excellent administrative, oral and written communication skills; human relation, mediation, and training skills; and the ability to handle confrontational individuals or environments.

Physical Demands

Physical Requirements

Must be able to meet the physical demands associated with a University housing environment which may include extended periods of walking, office work, lifting up to 25 pounds, and extended work days.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a busy office and University housing environment. Work involves a rotating 24/7 on-call duty schedule with occasional late night/early morning and weekend responsibilities. Resident Director’s mainly work from their assigned residence hall office but are required to provide a minimum of two days of coverage in the main office each week.
