Overall Purpose and Objective
Maintaining safety for everyone and ensuring continuous security, follows the established guidelines and procedures in regular daily tasks. This position aims to guide juveniles toward successful rehabilitation by providing supervision, mentorship, and access to resources that encourage accountability, reduce re-offense, and support long-term personal development.

Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
  • Care, custody, and control of juveniles assigned to Juvenile Justice Department programs, including guidance, crisis intervention, and redirection of juveniles in connection with their conduct, attitudes, and relationships.
  • Guides delinquent participants to channel behavior in a more positive manner using approved therapeutic approaches, education, self-discipline, responsibility, and respect for authority, oneself, and the community, as needed.
  • Provides disciplinary support to school personnel in the event of disruptive behavior exhibited by a juvenile, as needed.
  • Prepares detailed reports as required and submits them to supervisors on a daily basis.
  • Admits, processes, and conducts orientation for newly admitted juveniles to their assigned program, advising juveniles on the rules and the observance of discipline requirements on a daily basis.
  • Must be able to lead and interact through participation in therapeutic, physical, athletic, cleaning, and recreational activities with juveniles.
  • Conducts physical fitness and/or teaches juveniles close-order drills as required.
  • Attendance at staff meetings is required.
  • Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.
  • Must be reliable and motivated to help others and show evidence of personal qualities, character, and empathy; be able to use good judgment, relate in a friendly manner, and follow guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • Must be able to work in close contact with children (10-16 years of age) and work with physically, emotionally disturbed, and/or violent children.
  • Basic typing proficiency and fundamental computer skills.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in English.
  • Must be able to speak clearly and listen to communicate with the juveniles
  • The work consists of dealing with emotionally disturbed and/or violent children who could pose harm to themselves or others.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Must (1) be twenty-one years of age or older (2) have obtained a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (4) have a valid Texas driver’s license with a good driving record.
Prefer a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university (recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board) in criminology, corrections, social work, psychology, sociology, or a related field preferred. One (1) or more years of full-time experience in casework, corrections, or a juvenile agency working with offenders, disadvantaged individuals, or emotionally disturbed and/or violent youth preferred. Honorably discharged U.S. military service may be considered applicable experience.

Physical Demands/Work Environment:
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.
The work is typically performed sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, walking, kneeling, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.
The work requires strength, flexibility, and the ability to physically restrain an out-of-control juvenile using the department’s approved personal restraint technique.
Emergency Preparedness Tier Level: 1

Special Certifications and Licenses:
Must meet eligibility requirements for appointment as a Juvenile Supervision Officer, shall not have disqualifying criminal history, must obtain current CPR certification, current First Aid certification, current physical restraint training/ certification, and eighty (80) hours of in-hire training that is approved by the Texas Juvenile Probation Commission, within the first six months of employment, to become certified. Must maintain required certification throughout employment, including recertification every two (2) years. Must have no disqualifying criminal history. Requires 80 hours of training every two (2) years and current certification in First Aid, CPR, and approved physical restraint techniques. Employees must maintain documentation of all completed training.
