Assistant Superintendent of Teaching and Learning
Position Description

Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Superintendent to provide leadership and direction to the planning and implementation of the district's instructional and student support programs to promote academic achievement.
Essential Functions
- Collaborates with system departments and schools to assure mutual understanding and teamwork of areas of common concern in order to meet district strategic goals.
- Develops, implements, and oversees the school district's instruction and student support programs in accordance with District goals and objectives, as well as with applicable laws.
- Researches, develops, and leads implementation of innovative practices in curriculum organization and instruction for elementary, middle, and high schools.
- Ensures that instructional programs incorporate the experiences, culture, history, and perspectives of people from various cultures and backgrounds.
- Directs the selection and adoption of instructional materials, textbooks, media, and software materials for the District.
- Monitors the school improvement process in alignment with district initiatives while overseeing streamlined services to schools.
- Interprets, evaluates, and analyzes student assessment and program evaluation results for the purpose of improving instruction and student achievement in the District.
- Coordinates the development and implementation of effective and efficient assessment systems and data collection processes that provide a record of baseline measures and track longitudinal trends.
- Plans, coordinates, and directs the professional development program and activities in the District, promoting a focus on student learning and professional growth.
- Supervises development of annual budgets for the Teaching and Learning Department and for new and/or expanded programs.
- Directs the development and management of state and federal grant proposals and budgets.
- Implements and monitors federal and state requirements and regulations pertaining to instructional programs, professional development, and curriculum standards.
- Recommends, coordinates, and assists in the development and revision of Board policies and administrative procedures related to teaching and learning.
- Serves on the Superintendent’s Cabinet and attends Board of Education work sessions and meetings.
Qualifications
- Valid Georgia Educator Certificate in Educational Leadership required
- Specialist (L6) or Doctorate (L7) degree preferred from an accredited college or university
Experience
- Minimum of seven (7) years of experience in school, district and/or state-level education administration with demonstrated success
- Experience as a strategic leader in critical planning, change management, facilitation, coaching and counseling others, dispute resolution, and data analysis
- Proven ability to work with others in a confidential, cooperative, and service-oriented manner; excellent listening and communication skills.
- Experience in a system characterized by multi-ethnic and cultural diversity preferred
Equipment
Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
Physical Demands
Routine physical activities associated with a typical office setting. Ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, and repetitive fine motor activities. Vision, hearing, and verbal communications are essential functions of this position.
