Controller

Position Summary

The Controller is responsible for directing the organization's accounting and financial operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, compliance, and effective fiscal management. This role provides oversight of core accounting functions, including payables, receivables, general ledger activities, budgeting, audits, and financial controls. The Controller will also support strategic financial planning and lead the accounting team in maintaining efficient and compliant financial processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct daily accounting activities, including general ledger maintenance, financial reporting, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and account reconciliations.
  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements while ensuring accuracy, completeness, and adherence to applicable accounting standards.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process across departments and monitor financial performance against approved budgets.
  • Analyze financial results, investigate variances, and provide recommendations to leadership regarding corrective actions or process improvements.
  • Maintain oversight of grant, project, and program accounting activities, ensuring expenditures align with funding requirements and approved budgets.
  • Coordinate financial reporting requirements for externally funded programs, including government-funded initiatives.
  • Supervise accounting staff responsible for transaction processing, reconciliations, allocations, month-end close activities, and other accounting functions.
  • Establish, evaluate, and strengthen internal accounting procedures and controls to protect organizational assets and ensure financial integrity.
  • Identify accounting, compliance, or control concerns and communicate findings and recommendations to senior financial leadership.
  • Partner with executive finance leadership to enhance accounting systems, reporting tools, and operational efficiencies.
  • Coordinate preparation for annual financial audits, retirement plan audits, and regulatory examinations.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop accounting personnel while fostering a high-performing team environment.
  • Deliver financial guidance, training, and support to internal stakeholders on accounting-related matters.
  • Participate in organizational events and initiatives as needed.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and special projects assigned by leadership.

Qualifications

Experience

  • Seven to ten years of progressive accounting or finance experience.
  • Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Experience with budgeting, cash flow management, financial analysis, and financial reporting.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, and cloud-based productivity platforms.
  • Experience with nonprofit or fund accounting software is advantageous.
  • Spanish language proficiency is beneficial but not required.

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred; equivalent professional experience may be considered.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred.
  • Previous experience leading and developing accounting teams, with at least three to five years of supervisory responsibility preferred.


Salary : $110,000 - $130,000
