Friends’ Central School Overview

Friends’ Central School is an independent, coeducational Quaker day school founded in 1845 and serving approximately 850 students in Nursery through grade 12. Located in the Philadelphia suburbs, the School has two campuses. The Middle & Upper Schools are located just outside of West Philadelphia in Wynnewood, and the Lower School is on our Old Gulph Road campus in the heart of Wynnewood. The Lower School, which is grades Nursery through Fifth Grade, has approximately 270 students.

Part-time School Van Driver - Morning and Afternoon Routes

This is an hourly non-exempt part-time, 10 month position and reports to the Director of Transportation. Primary responsibilities include operating a nine (9) passenger school van safely and on time over an assigned route and maintaining prescribed rules for the safety and conduct of pupils while they are being transported to and from school or school-sponsored functions. Job entails morning (6:30 to 8:30 AM) and late afternoon (5:30 to 7:30 PM) transportation runs between Swarthmore, PA and the FCS City Avenue Campus.

Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Drives a nine (9) passenger van over an assigned route, loading and unloading pupils at designated stops at scheduled times.
  • Maintains prescribed rules and regulations to provide for the safety of pupils while boarding, riding, or leaving the van.
  • Performs pre- and post-vehicle inspection activities to ensure proper operating conditions, adherence to prescribed Department of Transportation and school standards, and compliance with proper safety standards. Reports the need for repair or maintenance work to the Director of Transportation.
  • Keeps all windows, windshields, mirrors, headlights, and taillights clean at all times; sweeps interior van floor and empties trash daily.
  • Monitors daily van activities to ensure proper student conduct and adheres to appropriate disciplinary controls.
  • Completes and maintains disciplinary documentation, and updated student information as required.
  • Renders necessary assistance to students who become ill in the vehicle or who require help boarding or leaving the van.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License and a minimum of two (2) years of licensed driving experience with a satisfactory, clean driving record.
  • Requires the ability to successfully pass a criminal background check, child abuse clearances, and pre-employment physical/drug screenings.
  • Demonstrated ability to fulfill the physical and dexterity requirements of the work.
  • Must possess the temperament to work constructively with students and staff exhibiting a wide range of emotions.
  • Employee frequently performs tasks in seasonally hot, cold, snowy, icy, or wet conditions.
  • May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions such as weather extremes, traffic hazards, noise, and routine automotive fluids/fumes.
  • Employee performs tasks involving regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving a combination of sitting, using hands/fingers to operate vehicle controls, climbing into/out of passenger vans, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and lifting or securing objects and equipment (20–50 lbs).
  • Most tasks require visual perception, depth perception, spatial awareness, and clear oral communication ability.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine, standardized work with latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
  • Ability to operate, maneuver, and control the actions of the assigned vehicle, passenger seatbelts, booster seats, and wheelchair tie-down devices.
  • Ability to provide guidance, assistance, and interpretation to students regarding safety procedures and rules.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and decisiveness in unpredictable driving situations or emergency scenarios.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to communicate effectively.
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations (addition, subtraction, counting miles, fuel logging).
